ive looked over this post a few times and ive thought about it, and you are in quite a situation.

first thing i would do is make sure she is ALWAYS aware of her surroundings. you and i know that is the way to avoid most trouble to begin with....for some reason womens heads dont register that the same way.

second, i would school her in the fine art of shock fighting. you know, where she takes her thumb and puts it in some guys eyeball, then rips his cheek off while gouging his throat with the car keys.......you know, good stuff like that.

cant always be prepared man, its impossible. being aware is of the utmost importance however......short of paranoia have her act like the rapist is omni present when outside of the house at all.

i respect your decisions about the guns, thats a tough one.
im sure everything will be fine, but you will continue to worry until there is a resolution and that sucks. good luck....and maybe get one of the "This House Protected By Smith & Wesson" signs.....LOL

Sadly, this is changing, but, d'u know what we do in the UK?

We might consider the 'large dog' option, but like ATG says, kids and dogs are a pottentially lethal mix (and it's not the dog that would come of the worse).

We don't reach for a gun.

We do realise that the chances of anything happening to us personally is vanishingly small.

We get on with our lives.

And if something should happen to us personally - sure it ain't nice - but that's life. Life ain't nice. And wrapping your self/wife/kids up in cotton-wool ain't gonna change that.

She will not carry pepper spray in the house because she's afraid the kids will get it. The kids go in and out of our backyard, so the back door is open most all day while I'm at work 25+ miles away.
Helecopters buzzed our neighborhood last night as the nearby apartment reported a suspicious person in the bushes ( 1000 feet from my house ).

Any advice not involving a large dog?
Make your wife dress like a freak.  It says he scopes his victims in advance.  If she looks scary he will move on.  Just pretend it is halloween for a few months.

The alternative is to teach your kid to shoot and arm him.  Probably not the best choice although I am sure someone will support it.

Pump shotgun.  Let her know where the shells are or have her keep 00 buck shells in her pocket.  No danger to the kids if the gun isn’t loaded.  That’s what I’ve done for home protection for my wife since she grew up with 3 brothers so she knows how to load the weapon.  The sound of a round being chambering into a Mossberg 500 could make a criminal crap his pants and leave.  Otherwise he’ll leave with lead filled butt cheeks.  Hope you find something that will give you both some peace of mind.

And that Akita looks awesome.

They are an amazing dog, totally loyal to their master, but, they have a top dog mentality you have to be the boss or you're in trouble. If you have a dog already don't bring in an Akita into the home, because it will kill it as sure as God made little apples. i've seen it happen time and again.  They pretend to be friendly, tail's wag & as soon as the dog comes within striking distance, it's night night - i've seen a 6 month Akita pup tear the head completely off of an old blind family dog, in front of the children (the person wouldn't listen to me about waiting for the old dog to pass on first before bringing the dog home)

They are a lot of dog (too much dog for some who own one tbh), very big, very strong, all shear muscle to the front and massive jaws, but a more loving loyal dog you couldn't ask for..

Yeah, my uncle-in-laws malamute is like a big teddy bear.  It isn't allow inside when guests arrive, so it stands at the door watching everyone and looking sad.  For hours.  BIG dog though.

did you read it?  just some perspective that wouldn't hurt anyone to view.  how about taking the wife to the local gun range to get her familiar with a weapon.  show her that it doesn't mean instant death by holding one.  who knows, she might like it.  this was the only way my wife let me get an off duty weapon.  buy and install a gun locker in your bedroom or wherever you want to keep it.  i saw one at gander mountain for $35.  if your kids are old enough teach them gun safety, see if your local police or sheriff hold safety classes.  she's just probably thinking that her husband who plays bf2 all night wants another toy.  i may be wrong but at least i'm throwing ideas your way.

Thanks for the advice but....

It helps to read the OP, I guess ( no offense ). And perhaps you missed the part where i said I have lots of guns.
My wife shoots.
We made a decisio as parents to store the weapons seperate from the ammo where my son could not possibly get to them rendering them ineffectice. I simply will not take chances with firearms and children.
As for the cougarrats and other assorted nonsense, thanks

Get one of those little dogs, Chiuauha or something, that bark at everything. This could alert your shepard who could take him down and maul him or something.

P.S hope to get a Malmute soon.

Shoot her. Problem solved!

...

But that isn't for everyone...

So I suggest you get a nice security package for your house & learn some martial arts. Also, you could become skilled in the art of knife throwing - you need knives for cooking, so she can't exactly stop you having them in your house.

Barring these alternatives, a dog is a great thing to have. Rottweiler, Alsatian - these can be viciously loyal. A great companion for you, and a terror for intruders.

All the best,
Andy

Keep large blunt objects within reach. That's about the only weapon that can't misfire.

Tsk tsk, he said no large dogs everybody. However, nothing was said about large cats. ATG, buy a cage for every door in which you can put a tiger, panther, cheetah, jaguar, puma, cougar, or mountain lion.
