So, Ive been thinking and unfortunatly my crappy Physics education failed me in answering this question.

If an event was organised in which every single human being jumped at the same time at about the same height, do you think the earth would move?

In short: No.

Yes, it would keep rotating and revolving.

nope.

i like being a smartass so heres my explaination
earth=round (or close enough) , so if everyone jumped at precisely the same time and height, east and west would cancel out and nothing would happen.

in reality...couldnt happen anyway

Well, I guess it depends on what you mean by move...

Move out of orbit... Nope.
Move n distance in a direction... Nope.

I guess you could cause a tremor -- like a bomb landing.

If everyone was standing on the same spot it would.

no.  the earth's rotation isnt effected by the power of hurricanes, earthquakes or nuclear blasts.  the weight of 6 billion people wont do anything.  even if theyre all fat

How about this melon scratcher then:

Say we dig a hole a mile in diameter all the way straight through the center of the earth. What happens if you throw something down the hole?

Once you pass the center of earth you are technically defying gravity on the other side, so my guess is that it would probably just get itself stuck in the center of earth.

Then you would have to take into  account this; a man standing in oslo at so and so latitude/longtitude would only have the jump cancelled if there was another man jumping in line with the man in Oslo.

i dont think you could get that deep in the first place without the thing digging turn to dust with all the rock and what not or collapsing on itself due to the pressure.  and the magma.  the earth has got a gooey center.

no, we actually calculated that one in class.  even if we were all 300 pounds, nothing would happen.

true. and since this wont happen with every location in the world there will be more force generated at some points than at others.

however, it still wouldnt have THAT much of an adverse effect into anything the world was already doing.
considering the billions of people in the world, having 1000-2000 people creating more force parralel to another wouldnt really amount to much.

Well, if they were all fat, they couldn't jump very well, now could they?

My physics lecturer told me that if the entire worlds population plus another 10 billion people or something, walked in a certain direction you would slow down or speed up the earth in the direction. Of course we're talking absolutely minimal difference to the point that not even measuring equipment could detect it. Though I still really believe it like.

Well, I guess it would eventually, but before that it would bounce back and forth.

Unless you were to launch it with enough force to escape Earth's gravity.

Supposedly the entire worlds population should be able to stand shoulder to shoulder on the Isle of White.

Technically if you jump up and down the Earth moves, just not very much. If everyone did it it wouldn't cancel out as there are far fewer people in the Southern hemisphere than the Northern one. It would move more than when you did it, but still almost nothing, plus when everyone lands it will be back to where it started from.

Um no, but on an unrelated note the earth is slowing down because of the gravitational effects frrom the moon in the opposite direction of the spin. In a few mellinia earth will have 36 hour days. Just wanted to spread the word

Thats what happens it goes back and forth from the original force to be cuts down by 9.8m/s from the gravitational pull from the center of the earth. Once its stopped you will find it settled in the center of the earth.

I really don't think that there would be enough force behind the jump. Plus, the earth probably has more mass than all that inhabit it.

Newton's 3rd Law: To every action there is always an equal (in magnitude) and opposite ( in direction) reaction.

I think that if everbody jumped, the earth would push back at an equal magnitude. And nothing would appear out of the ordinary.
