Nobody in the UK ever leaves the petrol pump. I dont think I've ever been to one in the UK that you can use without having your hand there (unless its a HGV pumping station). Anything can happen while you are away from it.......always stay next to it!!
True enough. However I've also seen them stay at the pump, and then get their mobile phone out of their pocket and start to use it, or worse still - a packet of cigarettes!

Petrol stations have PA systems for one reason and one reason only - so the till-jockeys can shout at complete idiots that think sparks/flames and petrol vapours make for a good mix...
mythbusters showed that mobile phones might not necessarily be the cause of explosions, but still I wouldn't use mine, and cigarettes?!? thats just asking to die.  An open flame with that much vapor around? great idea
Like in Zoolander =p

Anyways, I say we ban static electricity. Anyone in the DC metro area should remember the days of the DC sniper. I think anyone would be damned if they were gonna stand around in the open pumping gas with two individuals driving a "white van" carrying a sniper rifle.
