So... if you have a pathological liar, the only thing you can count on them to do is lie. Which the US knows.Poseidon wrote:

What scares me, is that they know we expect them to lie. So, if they know, what if they are suddenly telling the truth?
Ok, but even if they do get them at some point, nukes are no real threat. Can't be used. They're an asset for the country that owns them, but on an entirely different, theoretical level. See how different the approach on NK for example, that do have them. No threats for attacks there...GunSlinger OIF II wrote:

I won't argue with that... But any possible Iranian militants fighting in Iraq certainly does not legitimize an attack on the country itself since both sides fighting in Iraq are outside their jurisdiction.GunSlinger OIF II wrote:

FYI... the YAL is a DARPA project we're still fiddling with over the desert in the western states. If you'd taken the time to read the article you Googled and pasted, then you'd have read that they haven't even deployed it yet. In fact, the laser has only been successfully tested from the ground... so it's a long way from patrolling the friendly skies.
We can go roundy-roundy all night on the subject of ballistic missile defense, if you like... but if you get your info from Wikipedia then I doubt you'd have much to add to the discussion.

The only thing we know for sure is that both sides lie. And that nukes are not a real threat. If any country (or even organization, to tackle the usual response) were to use them they would face instant annihilation. Nukes only function as tools for respect during negotiations.Poseidon wrote:

On the subject of anti-missile defense, there's the Patriot system again, which I think they've improved from last time.
But can Iran even hit Israel? Iraq was having difficulty, and they'd modified the SCUD system for longer range and higher speed. Unless they have a better missile system (which I somewhat doubt the Russians would have given/sold them), my map says otherwise.
I'm sorry, my sarcasm detector just blew up.Aegis wrote:

typical. the minute it's wikipedia you dismiss it. so much for debate and serious talk. if you're going to start with the insults just because i used wikipedia just leave the forum, seriously. Wikipedia's just as good of a source as any. Christ, it's not like that article's completely false. I can just as easily find another article. That was just the first one to come up.
Happy? Jesus christ. http://www.fas.org/spp/starwars/program/abl.htm
of course they haven't deployed it yet! there's no country with nukes threatening us! not yet atleast. our last major threat was Russia. North Korea was never a major threat in launching nukes. Just finding ways to obtain them.

on your first point, yes you are right. they cannot be used regionally. the fallout will affect a lot of southwest asia and the "holy land"....but, please take my word for it, although they say that its against islam to use such a weapon, but when the times get tough...oug wrote:

cant be ruled out. but i see your point and made very well. having an arsenal that you dont intend on using is just as good as actually using em. i dont feel comfortable, though, with religious fanatics with their finger on the button. thank zoroaster for checks and balances . you never know when they want to get an itch to bring the end times. kim yong ill is a stalinist despot that ust wants more brandy and porn. different kinds of gov't to deal with. iran is ofcourse a theocracy. they got a mission from god.
on your second point all i could say is i agree with you in principal but then thats where i see my own personal conflict. as a person who has always been against the invasion yes, out of jurisdiction. as a soldier, veteran and infantryman (once a grunt, always a grunt), my jurisdiction starts where ever my boots are pointing.I know I know tell me about it, i gotta live with me...

Can't say that I am. I'm much more worried about floods and earthquakes.
The laser works when sitting on the ground. Hasn't been successfully tested from the air. The project is just an experiment at present. Still years from being operational, etc.Poseidon wrote:

Patriot is essentially our only deployed ballistic missile defense platform. THAAD and SM-3 are nearing the end of their evaluation phases and will be on the ground/in the fleet soon.

Seeker imagery from the latest SM-3 shot. Kinetic kill warhead. Hot shit.

Ah. Well, by that time Iran may have gotten nukes. And when they launch one we can stop it dead in it's tracks.Aegis wrote:

yea I'm worried about Iran. Its gonna be WW3. Hopefully the whole world doesn't get fucked into nuclear warfare.
I'm not worried and neither should the American people be.
Iran is thousands of miles from the USA and can't reach you.
Your government wants the middle east to drain it of its oil, plain and simple. The evidence is now plain for all to see, Bush admitted it himself, that pretext for war with Iraqi was fabricated. It dumbfounds me that you people are so god dam stupid to let the same propaganda machine convince you that Iran is now a threat. Iran is only developing nukes because it was placed on the Axis of Evil, earmarking it for future invasion or bombing. If I was Iranian and being threatened by a military super power with the power to "bomb them back to the stone age" I would be demanding that my government develop nukes for protection. The "preventing Iran developing nukes" pretext for invasion this time is bullshit. If it was a viable pretext then why did the USA & Uk do nothing to stop Israel and India developing nukes? It holds no water and is just a cloud of bullshit that you people are sucking up and believing. Turn of your TV for 5Min's and think for yourselves ffs.
Some of you foaming at the mouth war mongers who post here are drooling over another war so you can see your military toys being used to your delight meant like kids playing with model planes, with no thoughts for the millions of civilians who's lives will be ruined.

I don't know... I guess I don't see how religious fanatics might differ in the handling of nukes from secular governments. To me it's quite simple... you use them, and humanity dies. Simple as that. In the end, its not as if they're all ready to die for their cause. Much less take everyone else with them... Also, it is my impression that portraying Iranian leadership as fanatics who can't be reasoned with is just a scam.GunSlinger OIF II wrote:

Iran won't do shit in Europe. If they drop a nuke there sure the US would respond, but lets not forget that both the UK and France also have a decent stockpile of nuclear weapons. Iran could be turned into a glassy desert and the US wouldn't even need to be involved.
France wouldn't do that with Russia so near.
