Like what's already been said, helmets are designed to protect you from shrapnel rather than bullets. Look at the old British WW2 helmet, it was made from tin and only really protected the very top of your head. The modern US helmet, which either is or looks very similar to the current Bundeswher helmet, will most likely give you better protection form the sides and rear as well as the top. Correct me if I'm wrong though.
The big advantage the German helment had over British or American ones was the extra protection it gave to the back of the neck. As has been pointed out, soldiers helmets are not really intended to protect from direct hits, rather they keep the skull safe from bits of shrapnel and debris. The further down the neck this protection extends, the less likely you are to get a sharp lump of metal in the jugular.Deadmonkiefart wrote:
