Actually, the real history of the game:jord wrote:
Alls i know is a guy picked up the ball in the middle of a Football match and started running with it. Apparently that's how it was invented...M.O.A.B wrote:
How did rugby even get the name rugby? This has always eluded me.
So to not answer your question, a guy playing Football invented it.

But it was in England that soccer / football really begin to take shape. It all started in 1863 in England, when two football association (association football and rugby football) split off on their different course. Therefore, the first Football Association was founded in England.
On October 1863, eleven London clubs and schools sent their representatives to the Freemason's Tavern. These representatives were intent on clarifying the muddle by establishing a set of fundamental rules, acceptSoccer History - Rugbyable to all parties, to govern the matches played amongst them. This meeting marked the birth of The Football Association. The eternal dispute concerning shin-kicking, tripping and carrying the ball was discussed thoroughly at this and consecutive meetings until eventually on 8 December the die-hard exponents of the Rugby style took their final leave. They were in the minority anyway. They wanted no part in a game that forbade tripping, shin-kicking and carrying the ball. A stage had been reached where the ideals were no longer compatible. On 8 December 1863, football and rugby finally split. Their separation became totally irreconcilable six years hence when a provision was included in the football rules forbidding any handling of the ball (not only carrying it).
Basically once football was introduced/invented to England everyone had there own specific rules of what you can and could not do. In 1863 they had a meeting to generalise the rules. The soccer side won, the rugby side didn't like it so started the rugby assosiation with there own rules a couple of years later.http://rl1908.com/Origin-Rugby.htm wrote:
The origin of Rugby in England goes back long into the 19th century and even earlier. In 1800's formalities were introduced to football rules in the seven major public schools of England. Six of the seven schools were largely playing the same game (including Eton, Harrow and Winchester) - while the seventh, Rugby School (founded in 1567) at Warwickshire, was playing a markedly different version of football.
The other schools moved ahead refining their rules and eventually their game became known as "association football" - soccer. How the Rugby School's game developed differently is lost in history and the true story is unlikely to ever be known. The much revered tale of how in 1823 the young Rugby School student, William Webb Ellis, "in a fine disregard for the rules" picked up the ball and ran with it in a defining moment in sports history is now accepted by sports historians as being fanciful and a gross distortion of what is known.
There is no doubt that Ellis was a student at Rugby School from 1816 to 1825, but he was never mentioned by anyone as having done the actual deed ascribed to him. The first reference to Ellis appeared in a Rugby School magazine in 1875 (four years after Ellis' death) by an Old Rugbeian, M. Bloxham, who was endeavouring to refute claims that rugby was an ancient game.
Bloxham's story has always been in doubt because of the time that had passed since Ellis supposedly ran with the ball. Bloxham himself wasn't there and no living person could corroborate his version of events. In addition, examination of existing records and documented recollections does not show that the Rugby game dramatically changed after one event (i.e. Ellis or anyone else deciding to run with the ball).
So Rugby is called Rugby Football if its full name is used.
Personally I'm not bothered what other people enjoy, I like NFL, but dislike soccer/football and rugby. But that's just me.

At least Aussie rules is still better than Gaelic Football. It's like Aussie football, but instead of professional atheletes you have the most brutal type of redneck playing. I fuckin' hate Gaelic football. Hurling I like, it takes a hell of a lot of skill to play properly, and it's a really, really fast game (one of the fastest ball games in the world), but bogball is just a steaming pile of shite, it's just 30 guys having a semi-organised fight with a football thrown into the middle.weasel_thingo wrote:

And then there's "Comprimise Rules", that bastardised hybrid between Gaelic and Australian Footballs. What a fucking shambles that is.
As an aside, how many football games are there? I've got:
Association Football (soccer)
Rugby Football Union
Rugby Football League
American Football
Gaelic Football
Australian Rules Football
[Comprimise Rules] (not sure if it should count, only gets played a few times a year worldwide...)
Anyone got anything else?
Oh yeah

Somehow I don't think the guy in yellow will fair to well agains the Elephants.
