i kind of came in on this a little late, so let me pose one question
If the rest of Islam is so ashamed in the extremist terrorist factions, why does the majority of the Islam population not seem to care? From what I have seen, the majority does not go so far as to blow themselves up, but they offer moral support and a little bit of help hiding and getting to where they want to go. If they were truly against this, they would want to turn in any terrorists they know of for sure to prevent further embarassment to their religion.

I think Islam is a religion that in the most of the issues are similar to other religion but in some chapters is more aggressive/violence.
a Muslim is a human first of all who can love, hate, be stupid or clever and so on but most of the Muslims have less knowledge about origin Islam and love living like other people in the world I think.

Islam like any other religion is a very peaceful one and true believers don`t make terrorist acts, terrorist hide behind religion - you find equally many religious fanatics among Christians and Jews as you`ll find connected to Islam.

All religions suffer the same problem the McDonald's at the mall has and that is the people involved with it. They are all happy peaceful ways of worshiping, they have some different views but nothing too radical. The problem is that religions like Islam are powerful international movements and can thus be used by people to further political and personal gain. It has become a rallying point for regional powers to use to push forward a political agenda. We counter that here by putting forward these people as hating Jews and Christians but we can't point them out so the minority that believes in the double standard gets seen as the majority and thus all of Islam pays the price. Incidentally, 'infidel' simply means 'not a follower of the faith'. I am an infidel. You, most likely, are an infidel.
Also, the purpose of jihad is often clouded in modern media. It is the protection of Islam firstly by peaceful diplomacy, and only by violent means when Islam faces extinction.
Islam itself stems from the Arabic word for peace - this is not a religion that is pure evil.
I may well have my own personal grievances with religion, but as for others wishing to pursue religion to their own end, I really couldn't mind about Islam. Scientology, I would say, was suspect; Christianity, too, has it's terrible dark secrets of fundamentalism (not even truly that - just skewing the truth quite heavily); even Judaism, Hinduism, Sikhism - the list goes on.
If you look hard enough in any religion you will be able to find some terrible things from people claiming to adhere to the religion fully.
Remember that humans have an amazing capacity for believing what they choose - rather than what may be painful to their beliefs.
I, too, once felt Islam was terribly corrupt and a menace on society. I am glad I spent the time to reflect on it with an open mind.
