I have this memory and this motherboard.

I was having problems with BF2142 crashing all the time (no blue screen or anything, just froze the whole system and I couldn't even Alt+Ctrl+Del).

I have the RAM in the recommended slots (the first and third slot away from the CPU). I tested my memory using Memtest86 and got errors in test #7. Same thing when I swap the sticks around. But if I just use one stick I get no errors (with either stick). So I think my third RAM slot is stuffed.

I've written to the place I bought it (it's all still under warranty) and I'm waiting for a reply. But while I wait, is there any other tests I can do to make sure it's a motherboard problem. If I send it back and there's no fault I get charged for labour. I don't have any other RAM to try out, but maybe there's another program that can more specifically diagnose the problem?

One thing I noticed while Memtest was running: it said I had CAS: 5-5-5-15, but it should be 4-4-4-12... is that a problem?

Any help would be .... helpful

You don't want them in the first and third slot ! You see the way 2 slots are green, and 2 slots are orange? Well, you want to put both of them in green or both of them in orange.

Yes Kyle....and on some computers that is the 1st and 3rd.

MSI messed up with the colouring. If they use the same method on their 965 and 975 mobos, it's still slot 1 and 3 that the RAM should be put in. Probably the designers at Microsystems International are a bit colour blind ;D
(btw. wouldn't it be slot 0 and slot 2 you're putting the rams in then?) So I think it's rather a mobo error than that there'd be something wrong with the memory.

Thank you. That is what I always thought. It is never the first 2 slots.

Correct. 1+3 = Dual channel.

Thanks for the replies.

I was a bit surprised that I might have put them in the wrong slots because when I built the computer I made sure to check the mobo manual.

MSI 975x Motherboard Manual wrote:

Important
- Dual-channel DDRII works ONLY in the 5 conbinations listed in the table shown in the previous page
- Please select the identical memory modules............
- Always insert the memory modules into the GREEN slots first, and it is strongly recommended not to insert the memory modules into the ORANGE slots while the GREEN slots are left empty.
The combinations listed are DIMMs 1+3, 2+3, 1+4, 2+4, 1+2+3+4. So I had 1+3 which is one green and one orange. Funny how it says not to put any in the orange slots while the green ones are empty but the green+green combination isn't on the list.... anyway, I've put both modules in the green slots (1+2) and I'll run memtest again, but it seems to be running OK so far.

The manual also says "Please note that each DIMM can work respctively for single-channel DDR, while both channels (in different color) populated with same amount of memory size will work as dual-channel DDR". Does that mean if I put both sticks in the green slots it won't work in dual-channel?

Exactly.

I guess not then.

1+3 = Orange and Green
2+3 = Orange and Green
1 + 4 = Orange and Green
2 + 4 = Orange and Green
1 + 2 + 3 +4 = All slots filled

Green I guess then is 1+2 which doesn't work for Dual Channel. Same goes with 3+4.

Run CPU-Z, select the Memory tab. It'll say if you're in Single or Dual channel.
