So, many people have been visiting the IRC using the link at the top. Good on you, IRC visitors! Some folks though, want to step it up a notch. They want to be real IRCers. From noobs to regulars to leets. But what does that take? Well for one, you need a good IRC client. There are a variety of clients, such as mIRC, HydraIRC, Trillian, Miranda IM, etc. This guide covers the first one: mIRC
mIRC is a donationware program. What does that mean? It's totally free, but after 30 days of using the program each time you start it up you get a 5-6 second nag window asking for donations, and the occasional opening of your web browser to their donation page. If you like the program, there's no reason not to donate, but you're not ever forced to.
Alright, so you went to www.mirc.com and downloaded the program and installed it. You open it and, what's this? No auto connect? Not as warm-looking as PJIRC? I'm sorry =/ But this guide will help you get it started. Just as a note, I'm using mIRC 6.17 with nnScript 4.03 which is why my windows look different. This guide should still apply for any versions of mIRC from 6.17 on.
1. Go to Tools>Options, make sure you're in the Connect options, and enter the forms appropriately (my stuff is greyed out because I'm connected to the server; and obviously, you want to put in your own name and nickname. The e-mail isn't mandatory, so I just set it to fuck@you.net):

2. Then go click on the + sign next to Connect and hit servers:

Click that drop-down menu and choose GameSurge for the network, then click the Add button and enter this info:
Description: Random GameSurge US Server (you european guys will want this to be EU)
IRC Server: irc.us.gamesurge.net (again, make it EU instead of US)
Ports: 6667
Group: GameSurge

Leave the rest blank and hit Add. We're getting close!!
4. Under Connect, hit Options. Click the Perform.. button and then tick the box that says Perform on Connect. Click Add and choose GameSurge as the network of choice. Make sure GameSurge is selected in the drop-down menu, then in the text box enter
/join #bf2s
And then hit OK, and then once more. This will set it so you automatically join the BF2S IRC channel once you connect to the gamesurge network. What you see in my screenshot is simply expanded; it automatically logs me in to my gamesurge account, activates my host mask, and joins a few more channels.

5. Great! That's it! Hit OK to close the Options window, and then hit the lightning bolt. This will start the connection process; if all goes well you'll be in the BF2S IRC in no time flat.
Congratulations, you just set up mIRC and got onto the IRC!!
--Taking it Further--
You notice how some of us (myself included) have a little + next to our names? It means we're voiced; in our IRC channel it's just a sign of status, but when the channel is muted (mode +m) it lets us talk. The guys with @ symbols are operators, or ops. They can kick and ban people from the channel, as well as give you voice. You want voice? You need a GameSurge account!
Go to www.gamesurge.net and at the top right, hit Account Registration. Follow the instructions and activate the account to have your Gamesurge account ready! Remember that perform window? Go back to it and enter this stuff at the top of the perform list:
/authserv login USERNAME PASSWORD
Where USERNAME is your username and PASSWORD is your password. Follow the instructions in the e-mail to change your password if you want, and then change it accordingly in your Perform.
You might notice that people have things like User.haxxor.gamesurge.net when you do a /whois on them (That's /whois USERNAME). That's a custom title; you can go to http://gamesurge.net/titles/ and get the command on how to choose a title there. Pick a title, copy the command, and then go to IRC (that means either the BF2S channel or the server window), paste it into the message box, and hit enter. HostServ will change your title. Then go to the Perform window and enter this under the /authserv thing:
//mode $me +x
This masks your host; it puts that title there. In the end, your perform list will look somewhat like mine.
Terms and Tips
Op: A channel operator, denoted by the @
Ops: Being able to use channel operator powers
Kick: Being kicked out of the channel; you can join right away
Ban: Being barred from entering the channel permanently or for a certain amount of time
G-line: A ban from the entire gamesurge network; it's pretty hard to get one of those so don't worry
IRC Op: An IRC operator, they have admin access to the network and can do things from registering channels to G-lining people
ChanServ: A bot that helps manage channels
Voice: Having the + next to your name and being able to talk when the channel is muted
PM: A private conversation between two users
Query: Another, technically correct term for PM
-Don't fall for the inbox trick. What's that? It's when your IRC window says "USER has sent you a private message. Type /s inbox to view it! (1 unread)" or something similar. All it is is a trick to make you leave the channel or disconnect from the network
-So how do you PM someone on IRC? Simply type /msg USERNAME MESSAGE to initiate a query
-Type /whois USERNAME to find out info on a user such as their IP/hostmask, and what channels they're in
-How do people do that "USERNAME slaps OTHERUSER around a bit with a large trout" thing? Right click on the user's nickname and click Slap! This is automatic. You can also type "/me MESSAGE" (without the quotes of course) to do your own thing.
-Don't fall for the DCC exploit. That is, if someone tells you to type DCC Send startkeylogger 0000 or anything like that, don't do it. It will get you a 24-hour GLine from GameSurge.
That's it, hope you enjoy the IRC!
