I'm doing a little survey about depression for psychology class. If you want to participate that would be great.
First I would need to know your:
Age, sex, level of education and your nationality.

The questions are:
What is depression according to you?

What is the difference between a real depression and just feeling sad?

What triggers a depression?

I want to know what YOU think and know about this subject so there is of course no right or wrong answer.

Depression is a low feeling of self-worth that is not based on reality.

Depression is not based on something rational, sadness is.

Product of environment, and sometimes chemical imbalance in the brain. I do not believe that every person diagnosed with depression has something physically wrong with their body.

Hope that helps, good luck with your survey

i think of depression as a an overall feeling of sadness, where one cannot seem to find happyness in anything

i think that sadness is just if something sad happens, and it just effects part of you for a relativly short time period, but depression is when everything seems to be wrong, and one cannot seem to find anything that is going good in their life

i think that depression is triggered by lots of bad things adding up at once, when things seem to just get worse and worse

hope i was some help

Well Maniac summed it up pretty well, but I'll take a shot at this.

15, male, finishing 10th grade in 3 days, Caucasian, USA

Depression is a state of mind where a person feels worthless and hopeless.

Real depression begins to affect your physical health (more prone to diseases, seriously), while normal moods of sadness are mostly harmless.  Depression tends to last longer too.

Depression is triggered by significant negative effects on the body and/or mind, and is usually a compound of multiple issues.  It is caused when a person is overwhelmed with the issues of their life and they become confused.  When someone is confused, they tend to be less productive, active, etc. which are all traits of depression.

Isn't it odd how we're all finishing 10th grade?

Deppression to me is feeling sad over everything

A real deppression can lead to suicide or EMO-itis, saddness it just a regular emotion.

Maybe a family member or someone dying, or no friends may be the causes of deppression

Depression is the overall effect of a lot of sadness combined into one.

Being sad is something you can get over with ease over time, while depression is something that lasts a long time and is much more serious than being sad.

Environment, chemical balances.

1. It's feeling anywhere from some sadness to lots of sadness for a long period of time, along with not enjoying things you used to enjoy and possibly suicidal thoughts.

2. Real/clinical depression lasts a lot longer than a few days, and can feel as bad as losing a loved one even though nothing major has happened.

3. Chemical imbalances mostly, although it can sometimes be more severe because of other conditions.

Depression: A feeling that is always there but you try to ignore it when your with friends but at the end of the day you feel like shit and even happy thoughts cant perk you up.

Depression>saddness. As Griffin said it, sad is just an emotuion, depression is more....mental?? i guess

Triggers: low self esteem being backed by somthing major thats recently happened. (for me is was the loss of someone i deeply cared for)

So there, i guess one would classify me as "emo" but its really not a good thing.
so hope this helps.
