Am I just inexperienced or stupid? (meaning to The Fray lyrics)

Here's the thing. I don't know how many of you listen to The Fray.

They're amazing in my opinion, and their songs mean so much to me. Anyway, I was looking at the lyrics to the song and there's something I can't get my head around.

Edit: I just read the rest of the lyrics and feel quite sure that's what he meant.

Anyway, I think it means that he/she would have stayed up with "you" all night if they'd have known how to cheer them up or keep them going kinda thing but as they thought that they wouldn't be able to "save their life" they didn't stay up...

Basically, if they'd known how to save a life, the person they were talking to would still be alive. Then he would stay up all night with them.
Like Entertayner said...just a bit easier to understand, I hope!

Yeah, The Fray are a good band - I'm thinking of seeing them at the Carling Academy here in Birmingham this October! £15 a ticket - bargain!
