Ha ha?
well, the best idea is probably to make sure the possible attacker cannot get into the house in the first place.
Keep the doors locked ( or at least closed ). Maybe your kids will have to ring the doorbell if they want to come in ( if they don't have keys of their own yet ), but that's little hassle compared to the possibility of an armed intruder sneaking in through the back door.
Either get a full-scale alarm system, or at least motion sensors with attached lights for the outside of the house. Nothing scares potential burglars/trespassers/intruders away better than light.
As has been suggested already, get a friendly neighbor with wife/kids to help you out. Have your wife keep their phone number on quick dial on her mobile, so she can call help that is close to her quickly.
You could offer to do the same for their family. Getting the community involved is always a good thing when it comes to home safety.
Some security companies here in Germany offer silent alarms that are hooked up to the nearest police station, even with remote CCTV cameras. Very effective. By the time the intruder has entered the house, the police will be on their way already. But I don't know if that is an option where you live.
The general problem with any sort of weapon ( gun, tazer, pepper spray, knife ) is of course accessability (sp?). A gun locked in a safe won't help much if the intruder is already standing in front of you, because all your doors and windows are completely unsecured, or even open. The best way is to keep the criminal outside. Having to face him inside presents too many risks, especially if you have kids.
As far as the current rapist situation is concerned, if your wife doesn't want to keep any weapon close to her ( and to be effective, close to her it would have to be, best on her ) all the time, I guess making the house itself safer is probably the best option, maybe with some effective self defense or martial arts training.
btw, has your wife ever thought about this: http://www.kh-security.de/shop/zoom.php?pid=341 ?
easy to use, not really dangerous for children, and can be carried on you all the time in a small holster.
Best of luck to you and your family.

the rumor when i was deployed was that if customs caught you bringing one of those back it would have been worse than an actual kalashnikov. something about geneva conventions. i thought it was silly but those were A BIG no no to have in county and if you got caught using it you were going to the hague. wish i knew more.
Am I correct in thinking that it's a metal stick? Why is this so bad exactly?
trip out. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Club_%28we … pic_batonswikipedia wrote:

Well your law system just gets more and more confusing
Age to kill: 18
Age to drink: 21 (lol)
Guns: Legal
Fireworks: Illegal ()
Metal Sticks: Illegal

well, I really don't know what to say to that. Some states allow concealed carry licences, meaning you can carry a concealed handgun around, yet they won't allow expandable batons ?
Sometimes I get the feeling the US has their priorities mixed up.
Those batons are compact, light-weighted, easy to use, and - with a little training - quite effective in a CQC situation.
If I remember correctly, there is even a scene in a hollywood movie that involves the use of an expendable baton by a woman in a home environment. Can't remember the name of the movie, though. Famous actress, I believe...
Anyways, good luck, ATG.

I'd say it's the result of people who want guns banned but can't do it due to public pressure, but can get away with things like this.
Still a stupid idea, but....................

Please don't judge the rest of our country based on the ridiculous laws and regulations of California.B.Schuss wrote:

They could be their own country and many of us wouldn't have a problem with that.
A baton in a woman's hand may not be defensive enough against a man wielding a knife or gun. The woman must have strength, speed and technique and the room to use it for the baton to be effective. In a hallway, bathroom or backed into a corner a baton would not be a very good choice of weapon.

true, but since ATG excluded basically any other type of weapon, that was the only idea left I could come up with..
I recommend maybe sending her to Krav Maga classes, to learn a great self defence which is used more in close combat situations, Maybe you and your wife could go together, that way she might not feel like she is being forced into something.
Heres just one link to many sites about it-

Also like B.Schuss says stopping a intruder getting in, is a lot better than trying to find something fight with once the person is in the house.
Noise is the best thing to put scum like this off, so Alarm system and personal alarm is a must.
Stay safe to you and your family.

Chances are that the rapist has moved because he might be aware that he's searched after. And even if he's still around, you're not the only person with wife and kids on earth. The odds that he would go after your family are quite inexistant. You'd have more chances to win the lottery than to have someone attack your family. You see too much movies.
The best odds you have to have something happen is to keep a gun at home.
A criminal is just passing by. On the other hand, a gun doesn't move. It's in your house waiting to be discovered. Then something really bad can happen.
I understand your concern about protecting your family, being a father myself. But the other thing I'm learning everyday is that kids have the knack of finding anything you want to hide.
The odds that your kids find the gun are MUCH higher than those of someone attacking your family.
Up to you..

Not true, we have a motion sensed light in our driveway (its pretty bright) and still, someone came up and stole a sub and an amp out of the back of my fathers corvette and tried to get the sterio out of his van... Ballsy motherfuckers... All the light did was let them see what they were doing.B.Schuss wrote:
