Problem is, nobody expected blanket amnesty without border security.

Solution:
Step:

1. Fix the border before anything else. Really fix the border. No, like really fix border security. Build fences, walls and increase pay for border patrol attracting more people to the job.

2. Export everyone illegal!!!

3. Issue work permits and allow them to become citizens after working for 10yrs(this would get rid of the criminals and the welfare moochers).

Everyone is happy!

If the US were to really fix the border you could kiss goodbye to the wine industry, not unless you can find some nice, clean cut Americans who will work for peanuts every season. The US knows the importance of immigrant labour hence why there are no borders, fences or walls.

Are you suggesting that it is a wise thing for them to leave their border wide open? Wouldn't it be preferable to put in place a system of temporary summer work visas for seasonal workers?

Bush focused on international affairs and forgot the border issue, not to mention other issues. A wall won't solve this problem. The US needs better control systems in the border and within the country. There are millions of illegal immigrants, and they should clean their situation, asking for residence, and then paying taxes. If you want to stay fill the forms. Then the government should decide who meets the requirements to stay and who doesn't.

I love this thread. "fix the border" "secure the border" "fix the border first". How do you propose to 'fix' or 'secure' the border? Bring the troops home and station them at all the check points with HumVee patrols and 50 cals?

Relaxing immigration quotas reduces illegal immigration, put simply, it makes immigration legal. It is one of the only two solutions, the second of which involves rifles and many dead bodies.
