Russia refuse to send Andrei Lugovoi to Britain for trail of the Murder of Alexander Litvinenko

"A period of tense relations between Britain and Russia is expected"
Paul Reynolds
World affairs correspondent, BBC News website

Well is the cold war beginning to get chilly again?

If it was your country man that was wanted, what would think or do?

What do you think will happen now?

The Russians are probably trying to censor the apparent conspiracy behind this.  I wouldn't be surprised if the guy who carried out the murder is shitting himself right now, in fear of the Russian government 'keeping him quiet'.
Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known.

Lets reverse the roles. Yep, we wouldn't send a Brit to Russia. America, yes. We'd send a Brit to the USA faster than you can say Guantanamo Bay. But we wouldn't send someone to Russia for whatever reason so i don't see why they should send someone here.

We all know the Russian government is corrupt but what can you do? Nothing will happen. Russia probably has more power than us anyway.

Of course there will

Not necessarily, it is illegal under British law to extradite someone if they are going to a country that imposes the death penalty for that crime.  So if someone committed a murder in the US and fled here we would have to lock them up (or the US could just promise not to kill them, which is the more likely outcome).

It has made the news quite a few times including the British guy who hacked the US military computers, he used the fact that the US could sentence him to death as a reason against extradition.  We also wouldn't let the US have that one-eyed, hooked Muslim preacher but that was more to do with the fact we both had serious questions for him.

nice maybe, but uninformed. As far as I know, Putin can't run for another term. He'd have to change the constitution to be able to do so.

russia really is beginning to step on the very thin ice now. there's a limit to how much BS we in Britain will take before it's war. especially if Bush etc. help out. I'd say they owe us a fairly big favour, after we helped them in iraq and afganistan.

Seconded. Russia is on the upswing. Huge profits are coming from the oil and gas fields. They are not the poor bastards they were in the 90's any more. They no longer need western money, therefore they don't have to back down to anyone any more.

I doubt if they'll extradite the guy. They can always claim that the evidence brought forward by British officials ain't sufficient, and that'll be the end of that.

It is more likely that the guy will disappear in some siberian coal mine and never be heard from again.

You're honestly suggesting invading Russia because they won't hand over one of their citizens? And with the US joining in on the fun?

@ OP I wouldn't have expected anything less from Russia. I look on Russia with more suspicion than on any other country on earth (and that's saying something when you include the likes of USA, North Korea, UK, Iran, France, China and Israel in the mix).

Lol yeah like any human being would survive a war between the US/UK and Russia...
Oh and btw the US also refused to hand over their CIA agents some time ago... so war with them too?
