Because most established religions didn't start out looking to strip people of their money, they've just become corrupted over the years because the people involved are, well, people, and that's the sort of shit people do.

Actually, one of the most disgusting things about Scientology (to me), and one of the things that really, really marks it out as being a dodgy cult rather than a real religion, is the notion that there are 'levels' that you can attain, and  you get a higher level by donating more money.  To get the top level 'secrets' you apparantly have to have given over $100,000.  That's a shit load of money.  Last I checked, none of the worlds major organised religions (Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism and Buddhism (not really the same as the others, but one of the big belief systems)) have anything like that.  You don't buy a Bible by installment, working your way up to discover that "Jesus Saves".

Oh, that, and the whole "Alien souls blasted around the world by nuclear-bombed volcanoes by an intergalactic warlord are now infesting humans and must be destroyed" business.  Even on the scale of some guy who walks on water and comes back from the dead, that's pretty crazy shit.

Valid point there, however if moses story was a fake then it was done thousands of years ago and probably got changed over time, back then people wrote crazy stories. Nowaday though the scientology story of that wierd leader from another planet getting aliens or what ever is just obsered. Seriously the guy was an author of fiction books, and look back there is  a great quote from someone from what he said.

Fair point.  That bit with the talking bush that was on fire also reeks of Moses being off his head on some kind of hallucinogen.  But then, I'd have the same issues with anyone who interprets the Bible (or their religious text of choice) literally as I do with Scientologists.

The bulk of the worlds religions act as sociological constructs, they provide people with answers to questions that (at least at one time) were unanswerable, and they provide a framework of moral guidelines which help society exist by allowing humans to live in their social groups without killing one another too often.

Scientology, so far as I can tell, doesn't do that. They have some notions that I find quite, quite weird, like an insistance on silent childbirth, because the mothers screaming could harm the child's spirit.  Or their pathological hatred of psychiatry and psychology (and I do mean pathological, it's Scientologist doctrine that those disciplines be destroyed).

Maybe it's simply a case of not being normalised to Scientologists behaviour as I am to Christian, Jewish or Muslim behaviour, but I currently hold the opinion that, when compared to the level of crazy set by the worlds major organised religions, Scientology is just that little bit crazier.

As an aside, I wonder how many Scientologist spider/sniffer programs this thread has triggered?  I've heard that they'll sometimes uncover discussions like this and join in, or try and have them shut down.  If Chuy gets any late-night callers with threatening lawyers, we'll know why, I guess...

I am actually offended that some people dare compare scientology to a real religion. If you can't tell the difference you need to get your head checked. About stopping scientology: I believe that anyone stupid enough to actually join the church of scientology deserves to get their money ripped from them. It is the single most retarded thing in existence and I can't actually believe it's gotten this big.

Yes, 12 years of catholic school and protestant parents fucked up my head enough than you.

Let's be real for a second, I will use catholic for example.
They believe in someone they have never seen and there is no proof of existence.
They believe in "fiery hell" ...... no proof of that.
They believe in heaven and purgatory....no proof of that.
They believe a man put two of every creature in a boat...
They believe a snake made a naked woman make a man eat an evil apple...

Now, I know you will say it is about faith and not proof.  Same goes for every religion IMO, even if you think it is messed up.

The no proof argument is very flawed IMO. Conversely you can say there is no proof these things didn't happen. I am not trying to make you, or anyone believe in any religion but to automatically say that they are simply false and are out right not true without any possibility for them to be facts is close-minded.

Last night I saw a programme called panorama, this episode was focusing on the 'religion' Scientology, did anyone else see it? Anyway having watched it, i couldn't work out if this was:

1. A big money making scheme
2. A bunch of crazy Yanks
3. The latest fashion for the movie stars
4. A genuine religion

Now I only saw the BBC's half on the story and I know that the media is not always truthful, but from what I did see it seemed as though this so called religion was nothing more than a cult. They stalked the reporter (what kind of religion does that?!) They made a short film making out the BBC to be evil and made up a bunch of crap to support it. It appeared as though whenever someone spoke out against the religion they would harrass them, for example one guy said that there was a 120 page PDF on his whole life on the scientology website just because he spoke out against the religion.

I mean seriosuly what kind of "church" has a church dedicated to celebrities? Let me explain, on this programme it showed one of the churches with big gold writing on it. The writing read something like "The Church of scientology for celebrities only" Something like that, but the point i'm trying to make is that no other religion would do that because religion is about belief not trying to make money.

Why have a scientology church dedicated to celebrites?! WTF!

I want to hear your views.

Edit: This Is the Link to the Programme if you did not watch it http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/programmes/panorama/default.stm
Well, i dont know much about scientology or its beliefs, i think its got something to do with the Alien conspiracy, but i find you comparing this religion to other religions... First, i find that a religion can have any sort of belief and system they want. The celebrity thing is kinda weird but ya know what, maybe there religion needs money, i guess theres no better way of getting money for your religion then targetting people with a lot of cash. I don't think its a big celeb thing cause most of the world regards religion as a very important thing, and i dont think you switch religions as a fad (just a temporary 'cool' thing)

Scientology has been proven to be inarguably false. Scientists have proven that within the realm of Scientology, that it is false. Within the realm of other religions, where there is a God and that God can give people powers they can be correct. Remember science cannot challenge real religions until they can prove that either God does not exist or the nature of God is such that it is contradictory to the teachings of real religions.

Probably because Scientology has some very sinister shit going on around it.  L. Ron's wife was convicted, along with a bunch of other people, for breaking into the IRS and stealing/changing records.    There are lots of stories about people becoming Scientologists and then coming to a bad end after having their assets drained away.  People who become Scientologists are often encouraged to break off all contact with their families and previous friends.  Scientology shrouds itself in layers of secrecy and protects itself with aggressive lawyers.

As an outside observer, who's read a lot of very dubious stuff connected with Scientology (some of which you can find here) it seems to me to be far more like a dangerous cult than what could be considered a real religion.

I do understand your point, and to an extent I agree.  If someone who had zero contact with any of the worlds religions was presented with the stories of Scientology and Christianity side-by-side, there's no telling which they'd choose as the more plausible or believable.  The problems I have with Scientology mainly stem from the things that go on around and in relation to its activities, rather than directly towards its beliefs.  I don't like them, plain and simple, and for that reason I make fun of them when I can.

When Christians piss me off, I'll make fun of some of the wacky shit in the Bible too.  But they do it less often.  Christianity is, like Islam, a fundamentally good religion in my opinion.  It tells people to live a good life.  Scientology on the other hand, pisses me off all the time, and I don't see any redeeming features.  It's bias, sure, but I don't think it's unjustified bias.

some quotes for your amusement all from L Ron Hubbard:

“if you cannot find bad things someone did, make them up."

MAKE MONEY. MAKE MORE MONEY. MAKE OTHER PEOPLE PRODUCE SO AS TO MAKE MORE MONEY."

"Show me any person who is critical of us and I’ll show you crimes and intended crimes that would stand a magistrate’s hair on end."

"Somebody some day will say this is illegal.  By then be sure the orgs [Scientology organizations] say what is legal or not."

"If attacked on some vulnerable point by anyone or anything or any organization, always find or manufacture enough threat against them to cause them to sue for peace."

"The purpose of the suit is to harass and discourage rather than to win. The law can be used very easily to harass, and enough harassment on somebody who is simply on the thin edge anyway, well knowing that he is not authorized, will generally be sufficient to cause his professional decease. If possible, of course, ruin him utterly."

"ENEMY SP Order. Fair game. May be deprived of property or injured by any means by any Scientologist without any discipline of the Scientologist. May be tricked, sued or lied to or destroyed."

"When you move off a point of power, pay all your obligations on the nail, empower all your friends completely and move off with your pockets full of artillery, potential blackmail on every erstwhile rival, unlimited funds in your private account and the addresses of experienced assassins and go live in Bulgravia [sic] and bribe the police."

    "They smell of all the baths they didn’t take. The trouble with China is, there are too many chinks here."
I couldn’t believe this one but its been proven true.

"I’m drinking lots of rum and popping pinks and greys."
- L. Ron Hubbard in a 1967 letter to his wife, written during the period when he was creating Scientology’s secret "upper levels."  (Bent Corydon and L. Ron Hubbard, Jr. a.k.a. Ronald DeWolf, L. RON HUBBARD: MESSIAH OR MADMAN? Random House 1989)

THE ONLY WAY YOU CAN CONTROL PEOPLE IS TO LIE TO THEM. You can write that down in your book in great big letters. The only way you can control anybody is to lie to them."

But other religions aren't a scam, they are not out to steal money, in other religions giving money is not required, you are asked politely to give money while with Scientology if you don't give money (and the money needed to give is tens of thousands more than any real religion would ever ask for) they will leave you out to dry. Also other religions do not attack critics, while yes many members do get enraged by them there is never any orders from higher ups to attack the critics. You said that Scientology needs to brainwash people still, well Scientology is the only group in the US that is considered a religion that actually does actively and intentionally brainwash people, real religions do little more than try to persuade people to believe them, while Scientology goes above and beyond that, they use blackmail, hypnosis, threats and other means. Saying Scientology is a real religion is like saying tarot reading is a real science.
