Firstly I don't think anyone should be allowed to join the army until they're 25.

Secondly, I personally think you should only join the army if you fully follow your country's politics and truly believe in the direction your Country is going in. The training and discipline you learn in the army can be great but bear in mind that it's the military on the ground that have to do the dirty work that decision makers in office aren't prepared to do themselves.

I watched a few minutes of a PBS thing on the Corps and it had a 15 minute segment on OCS, boots gonna be a cake walk compared, at least I am more physically ready now.  Cleaning the rifle all the time again is going to be boring but at least its the Corps.

In all seriousness I think the anti-recruitment people are good for the U.S. Military as they are good for the people. I talked to a recruiter at the mall once about it didn't fill out any information just gave him my name and town I lived in. Next thing I know I was getting calls about 4 times a day, he was actually going to places where I hung out. It was really weird and very aggressive, Now I was very young and honestly would have joined the Military if he hadn't been so pushy but I'm sure that alot of people go get pressured into it like that.

So having alternative options other then the military will allow our youth to make a more educated desicion on what they want to do if not collage.

1) Most high schools and colleges receive federal funding- so the military has every right to be there.
2) Recruiters can be a bit creepy, finding all your hang outs, chatting with your friends about you, and putting pressure on you. But these recruiters have a mission- enlist people. If they don't meet their mission(X number of people enlisted this month, they get in deep shit. Not to mention, that it' s really hard to enlist people. Recruits don't just sign the line and they're in. Lots of folks don't make it through the Medical portion, and you'd be amazed at how many guys are turned away due to a criminal record that can't be waivered.

I figured the "you could get blown to bits or otherwise killed" thing was one of the bigger turn-offs.

Hey, if they want there to be a lack of personnel in the military and have a draft instilled, let them protest.

I hope their numbers are picked first.

It's called freedom of speech. And it is a good thing. Whether you agree with their opinions or not.
It's also called lack of manners, barging in uninvited and interrupting a conversation. I'll also exercise my own freedom of speech and call these people assholes. Should wait their turn, I say.

It really won't hurt to have mandatory military service for a year or two.

at least theyll have something to protest about, not just feel like the new generation of hippies that the music and movies always painted the best pictures of.

I don't see how it's a problem.  In fact, I think it should be encouraged.  It forces recruiters to defend their beliefs and it ensures that people who sign up have heard all the options and are fully committed.

the recruiters have no beliefs to defend.  you realize most soldiers DREAD recruiting duty.  its not something you volunteer for, its something that your are selected to do and once you are selected you HAVE TO DO IT. I have not met a single recruiter that actually liked their job.  NO SOLDIER LIKES RECRUITING.

No, I mean that the people are going to argue about how the military is evil and whatnot, and the recruiter can respond by pointing out what they think is good about it.

Which is different from what was talked about in the OP.

Seriously though, how much trouble could the army have moving them aside?

they have the right to protest.  soldiers dont police their own civilians.  we fall under the guise of the law as well.  if a soldier were to have put hands on a protester, hed have to worry about civilian AND military court to try him for the same offense.  there is no such thing as double jeapordy in the military, you can be punished for the same crime more than once.

Declare recruiting centers federal property and have MPs patrol.

thats not gonna happen.  MPs only have jurisdiction on a military base.  recruiting centers rent space out from the city.  they are surrounded by commercial, industrial or residential areas.  its impractical and silly actually, but i understand since youre an aussie and you arent familiar with the way it works around here.  the military doesnt work that way.

Oh, I'm sure it works much the same way around here, it's just the government is much quicker to declare property Crown Land.

What I'm saying is the federal government should declare recruiting centers to be considered army bases.

ok, ok...well, they kind of are.  I know most Army bases are patrolled and guarded by civilian police and security personnel.  its not neccessary though because recruiting stations fall under the jurisdiction of the local police.  the only time you would have the federal govt involved is if someone were to commit a crime on the property and they get to see a federal attorney instead of the DA.

not even our army bases are guarded by soldiers.  security contractors.  Ive been in long enough to be a part of that transition. we USED to guard em.

also, that would be higher of a priority if you were to have weapons in the station and they dont. no sensitive items inside.  probably the only security liability would be all the social security numbers and personal information.
