Johann Hari: Distraught parents and terrified children
Published: 24 May 2007 The Indipendent

In the Congo, more than 70,000 children have been seized at gunpoint by militias in the past six years

The pictures of a small, smiling Madeleine McCann that are plastered across Britain and Portugal today never fail to do it. They always give me a slap-in-the-face flashback to a place where it is not an exception to have your child stolen away - to abuse you can't stop imagining. No, it is an everyday event.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, more than 70,000 children have been seized at gunpoint by militias in the past six years. Each one of those children is as terrified as Madeleine, and each one of their parents is as wrought and desperate as the McCanns.

The hole story from the Indipendent

Thankfully, the media have finally tuned down the stupidly high coverage this got. I think there was even a protest at Trafalgar square with loads of British parents with missing children wondering why one girl is getting so much attention when their child has gone missing too.

Fuck it, it's been 3 weeks now. That girl is gone.

Might be why Madeleine's parents held a short press conference on Friday stating they would not hold another if not breaking news came forth.

Sad to say i suspect that girl is gone for good, no disrespect for her family, i would prolly have reacted the same way but in comparison to other missing children that are equally missed she is nothing special.

The parents shouldn't have left her back in the hotel room why they went out for dinner and fun.  It's their fault, stupid people shouldn't breed!

No, she isn't unique, but I don't begrudge parents doing everything in their own power to get a kid back. The noble thing to do might be to tell the media to spread the love a bit, but the natural thing to do is to obsess about your family's own welfare.

The children of the Congo have suffered way more than the Children of Iraqi ever did. No oil there, so they will continue suffering until its in our interest to help them.

Now I believe this is starting to take it a bit far, now they're going to see the pope for crying out loud.

No...she isn't (yes, I know you were being sarcastic). Dime a dozen on our milk cartons.

No its one of the united states.................sorry.

I really think the press is using this story to sell papers now. Kids go missing every day, they are just not fortunate enough to be cute little white babies.

That's how is works, people want to know about their countries people, not some kids half way around the world.

In wars, let's say Iraq, soldiers of Britian make the British news because that's what people want to know, not how many Iraqi's died.

My Boss was in Portugal where the girl went missing when the whole thing happened and she said Sky News were like a bunch of vultures.

I wouldn't be surprised if that reporter (not a Sky News reporter admittedly) accused that British ex pat just to keep the story alive a little longer ...he doesn't seem to be the centre of attention anymore, one wonders if he had any involvement in the first place.
