Ya I had a good friend that was in the Gulf war.  Didn’t know him that long (8 months) but we were good friends. He joined the Marine Corps in 1988, got deployed to the gulf in 1990. He was stationed in Saudi and was shot in the hip when an Iraq tried to take a small Saudi town. Anyway long story short, He’d suffered from horrible head aches ever since about a month after he got back. One day I noticed he was acting weird asked him if everything was all right he said yes. Next day he stole my sisters truck drove to Mexico, drove back to the US, wrote me a letter, tried to kill himself…failed got arrested.  Got out of jail and is now heavily medicated and has a rare nervous system condition that effect his brain and causes him to have extreme mood swings loss of memory and go crazy from time to time. Physician  said  possibly Gulf War syndrome might be the reason..

Gulf War syndrome killed my father and raped my mother.

I was under the impression Gulf War syndrome wasn't a single ailment or set of symptoms, but rather a catch-all term for any illness linked directly to Iraq, if this is the case, there wouldn't be any one cause, would there/

Could you explain, in other words, what you meant by that?
I neither have, nor know anyone with, Gulf War syndrome.

I'm unsure if there's a clear medical criteria defined for Gulf War Syndrome, but it seems to be (roughly) defined  as a multi-symptomatic group of ailments typified by nervous system disorders (primarily) with secondary disorders of the immune system and other major organ functions.

What the OP's article was apparently saying is that there may be a more direct link between a specific incident/chemical than was previously thought.  i.e., it might be Sarin from a specific incident, rather than caused  by the laundry list of toxic agents that were previously thought.
So basically what I said is what it used to be, and they're now thinking maybe the definition is tighter than they thought?

Dude, it's D&ST, what did you expect?

Also, is Sarin in the Gulf War like Agent Orange in 'nam?

no.  sarin is specifically meant to as a biological weapon.  agent orange was merely a defoilant used to get rid of the vegetation that the VC/NVA would always hide in and ambush from from.  The badness from agent orange was from its unintended side effects to the people that were exposed to to it.

I remember being a young pup in my joe days and hearing stories from all the desert storm vets.  they would say how that SOMETHING was n the air.  they knew they got slimed because those NBC detectors kept going off. every time they went outside their tent, theyre would be a layer of film that accumulated on anything exposed.  you would be able to see it and feel it and actually wipe it off if youwere to brush your hand over anything.

DU supposedly caused a lot of birth defects in iraq right?  Im hesitant to blame it on that though.  I have never been to a place where so many children had birth defects.  I remember one kid would have this gimmick of going up to any patrols and telling joe that if you give him 20 dollars, he would cut off his extra thumb.  his extra working thumb,  that shit was awesome.  he wouldnt cut if off ofcourse.

I know the guys that were a part of the original invasion during OIF were exposed to a lot of DU dust.  they didnt give it to our task force though when we deployed.  I speant a lot of time playing around in dead tanks, lowing hes been exactly where i was at in Taji, hell know what im talking about.

Everything I've read about GWS is that they haven't quite pinned everything down.  Meaning, the cause or the symptoms are varied.

However, obviously exposure to Sarin or wars is not a good thing overall.

I'm kind of hoping someone clears it up soon, so we can figure out what exactly is happening.
