I promise that this will be my last tech topic for the moment as I have practically order the new components for my PC, this is just to conferm what I think to be true!

I'm getting this RAM: Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-8500C5 1066MHz Dual Channel Kit

And this motherboard: Asus P5N32-E PLUS SLi nForce (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

Basically, will it work?

It says in the specs :

"- Dual-channel DDR2 800/667/533
- 1333**/1066/800/533MHz
(** available when CPUs are ready for 1333MHz FSB)

I don't fully understand which is to do with the RAM and which the CPU

Any help really appreciated.

The board doesn't officially support that speed of RAM, but I'm sure it will be fine. You might need to manually increase the voltages for the RAM and maybe do something to the timings, but you could save some moola and get these http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showprodu … mp;subcat=

They would run straight out of the box, and then you can push the speed to up to 1000Mhz (depending on who you believe).

It will work, but it may decrease its speed to 800MHz if it is incompatible.

I think it'll work, but the RAM will be running at 800MHz unless you over clock it to 1066MHz

it works just fine. the memory you are planning to get works @ 1066mhz but IT WILL work @ 800mhz too (speed supported by the mobo). if you are planning to overclock, the faster memory will help because higher FSB means higher memory speeds.

edit: by default it will work @ 800mhz with that mobo

Are they any motherboards that do officially support 1066MHz?  Even the Asus Striker Extreme doesn't seem to officially support it.

Sould I be able to overclock it to 1066 (with the motherboard I posted) and it (and the mobo) both work fine?

Thanks for all the help so far guys!

You need the new P35 boards, they're designed to accept DDR3 which will obviously be able to go over 1066mhz, so therefore can use DDR2 1066Mhz RAM.

Edit: You can still use your board but you'll need to increase the FSB so it will recognise 1066mhz RAM.

Yeah...I just realised

So I'm better off going for something like this?

there is EVGA nForce 680i SLi mobo that supports ddr2 speeds up to 1200mhz. that is IMO the best mobo you can get for C2D
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6813188013

that asus mobo does oc quite well so it might work @1066 as well. remember that no one can say how much you can oc. it depends of many things. some oc better, some don't.

edit: if you don't need SLi, get a gigabyte p35!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! teh best for non-SLi rigs

The DS4 version is pretty much exactly the same, and on SCAN thats only just over £100. Thats what I'm aiming for this summer. Save yourself some money and learn to OC your RAM and the Board, its really not hard. Just search for some tutorials and you'll be fine.

You'll be fine. You might have issues if you add another couple of sticks later. I've just been setting up a PC with 4 x 1GB sticks in, which wouldn't POST with all 4 in at 800MHz, even after raising the voltage and loosening the timings it was extremely unstable at 800MHz (had to drop it to 667 in the end). That was on a 650i board a lot like yours (although yours is the 680i version if I'm not mistaken), P5N-e SLI.

Haha yeah, just found it on SCAN too!

I'm trying not to cut corners so I think I'm going to upgrade the motherboard to maximise the potential of the RAM rather than downgrade the RAM so I'm not wasting performance from the motherboard.

Makes sense if you've got the money I suppose, I'm just trying to save a few quid on the RAM, and the one I showed you befor uses the Micron chips and has CAS4 timings.
