*NOTE* Even though you may not be from the US of A, please take the time to remember the fallen service members of your country as well. Oh, and Mods I wrote this all my own (excluding the Poem).

Today, as you should be aware of, is Memorial Day. Since 1775, more than 1 Million American Service members have fallen in the service of our country. Let us move past our political differences today and remember those that we are the land of the free, because of the brave. Please take this into consideration.

"In Flanders Field" by LtCol John McCrae, MD
(1872-1918)

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

The areas of Northern France known as Flanders and Picardy, saw some of the most concentrated and bloodiest fighting of the First World War. There was complete devastation. Buildings, roads, trees, and natural life simply disappeared. Where once there were homes and farms, there was now a sea of mud - a grave for the dead where men still lived and fought. Only one other thing survived. The poppy, flowering each year with the coming of warm weather, brought life, hope, color, and reassurance to those still fighting.

You guys sing that poem on memorial day in the US?

Since its a Canadian Poem, and we sing it on Remembrance day, I would think you guys would do something different.

Do you guys wear Poppies and stuff too on Memorial day?

Nice video Marine.

For Australia, remembrance day is the 11th month of the 11th day of the 11th hour.

But thanks to all who fight for our freedom.

People from all sides died on that battlefield, many can sing it.  And yes, the American Legion hands out handmade paper poppies.

If I didn't stumble onto this thread right now I would have never thought about what this day was really about.  I'm a shame that nothing I did really honor the fallen men and women who served our country.  Throwing a BBQ party, drinking beer, and then playing volleyball...

Should have at least busted out a prayer or sang the national anthem at the party.

Don't worry about it.  Just remembering them honors them.  You don't need to make an over the top showing if you don't want to.  Just pause and think.

Everyday I say a prayer for the Coalition forces and selfishly thank  the lord that its not me called up again to fight, I am home to look after the homeland and my family....a luxury the ''called upon'' do not have. Yes I am selfish to want to stay home to see my children every morning, but I thank the lord every night that my brothers and sisters are there fighting to keep me and my family safe.I love my brother and sister soldiers for keeping us ALL safe from harm. God bless them.

How was the last Monday of May picked as "Memorial Day"? Like, whats the significance behind the date?

Because for us, Remembrance Day is the day WWI Ended.

WW1  11/11 1918 was formal surrender of Germany in the great war, May 8th was Surrender of Germany WW2 in 1945 , I am guessing they maybe held off the ceremonies until end of May.   Anyone know any different?

Funnily enough, the Turks mourn the deaths of Aussies in WWI on their military holiday.
