ATI have just released their Catalyst 6.1 video drivers:

It claims to resolve an issue with Battlefield 2 Special Forces:

BattleField 2 Special Forces: A blooming or ghosting effect is no longer noticed when playing the game in night vision mode.

was it a bad thing as in over exajurated?(sp) because i notice slight blooming with nightvision on nVidia and i thought it looked pretty accurate and cool?

It's funny this was mentioned and noted... I knew the 5.13 drivers weren't worth using so I skipped out on it. I have been using the 5.12 for a while and probably will never get the chance to use the 6.1 drivers for a long, long time. My video card is here and I got my power supply. The motherboard arrives Tuesday and then it's sayonara to Catalyst.

It ain't to say that ATi is bad at coding drivers... just that this time, nvidia is my choice.

Yeah, sorta... I've plunked down on a GeForce 7800GT, with a possible SLI setup in the future.

The R9800 Pro that I have has served me well for a long time. I'm glad that it's survived all the 3D bashing that these games throw at it. At the time, it was the best thing to get since I didn't like how the FX series were performing.

Part of the reason for leaving is due to ATi's stand on the driver's controlling application/software. I'm not a big fan of their .NET-coded Control Center as well as the fancy interface that they used. There's a lot that I can do without and I rather have a streamlined and simple interface to controlling how the drivers are configured and how the card performs. But that's just me and many can very well disagree with it.

I believe the best option right now is going for the GeForce 7800GT... I don't have any Source games nor do I own many games that runs better on ATi hardware. Since EA/DICE touts running nVIDIA hardware for BF2, it seems like a logical choice.

Maybe someday when ATi releases something that bests nVIDIA's again that I'll return to using ATi hardware. But I'll give 'em props for their R9x00 series. It definitely handled a lot of the games I threw at it (like UT200x, Tribes: Vengeance, FlatOut, Guild Wars, World of Warcraft, BF2, GTA3, GTA:VC, Serious Sam 1st/2nd/2, and Doom3).

Sixshot, I know exactly what you mean about the Catalyst Control Centre - but there is an answer.

If you do a driver-only install (leave off the control centre) and then download and install ATI Tray Tools, you will have all the options and funtionality avaliable from a slick menu in your system tray.

ATI Tray Tools also has overclocking features, and a nice FRAPS style frame rate overlay.

I suspect the 6.1 Drivers have a memory leak somewhere. wierd things are happening on the machine i installed them on. keyboard stops responding or starts lagging on a bunch of games, bf2, cod2, quake 4.

Edit: it went away when i reinstalled the 5.12 drivers.
BTW its a amd sempron with a AIW 9600 128mb

Reason nobody answered that is because nobody can give you an answer.

It doesn't hurt to try out the latest drivers anyway... since some versions provide better performance than others. It's all a trial and error thing. If you're concerned about issues that may arise with the use of a particular driver version, simply go to ATi's driver download page and view their release notes along with the other 12 release notes that came before it.

Again, nobody can help you out on whether the new drivers will be of any benefits because that cannot be answered. With so many variables to a system setup, it's hard to gauge just whether it'll help or not. And the only way to get your answer is to try the new drivers out.

Got a 256mb 9800 pro here. What do you guys think of unofficial drivers? I downloaded a XG WarCat 5.13 but I'm afraid to install it as they write in agreement: we're not responsible if this fucks up your card. I know I shouldn't worry about that, I heard they're pretty safe but anyway.

Unofficial ones are just like the originals but with some minor tweaks. Your mileage varies with those and your best bet for 'support' is to find a forum where people can post up problems and get help. I'm sure that there's a FAQ somewhere regarding a failed setup or install. In theory, you should be able to uninstall the drivers if it doesn't do much for you.

Without starting a new topic, I have a 9600XT. I have terrible video lag issues in SF on the Iron Gator and Warlord maps as to make them unplayable in both single and multiplayer mode. Both the 6.1 and 6.2 drivers did not resolve any of the issues with it on 1.12 and 1.20 versions of SF.

Has anyone tried the new 6.3 Drivers with 1.20 in Special Forces? The 6.3 drivers are dated Mar 8, 2006.

Also has anyone tried them with the 1.21 patch yet in either BF2 or SF? What did you think if you did?

Actually ATI's 6.3 drivers and the 1.21 patch are better in multiplayer mode. They suck in single player as I still have the video lag when playing single player. I started on 800 x 600 and everything on low. Now I'm up to 1280 x 1024 with everything on low and I haven't had any lag problems in multiplayer. I'm starting to turn up things up to medium to see where I lose fps. I can knife guys in tight spaces again
