Do you think the sentence fits the crime or is China just looking to make a statement to save face.

I am not sure that Accepting Bribes qualifies for a death sentence, understanding of course that people died.  Maybe a life sentence.

So who should bare the guilt and the Guillotine?  The official that approved the drug, or the company president that produced it and avoided all quality controls.

The deaths that occurred were actually mostly from contaminated food products, not a drug that wasn't tested.

I don't ever think the death penalty is appropriate. Not for anything. Two simple reasons for that; It's irreversible and I feel it's an easy way out.

To me, 30 or 40 years of solitary seems a lot harsher than a death sentence, although the soul crushing approaching finality of it does make sense.

both, they should be made an example of.
it makes me very mad that drugs like Vioxx get out and kill or hurt people and the FDA just says "oops".....i bet they would regulate a whole bunch more if their asses were on the line.

Not to mention when someone gets wrongly convicted it's an unfair end for them.

Yes.  If we did this here though, we'd probably lose about 99% of our politicians.

Yeah, I wouldnt be one that would like to sit there on death row waiting for my turn to come, not to mention I dont want to pay to keep someone in prison for 30 or 40 years either.

I love that no one has made comment on the numerous reasons, political and economic, why they are doing this.

^^^ This is not a response to above... you simply pressed the [submit] button before I did.

Of course it's appropriate - for their current society. You can't judge an inside from an outside. Here in America (or other Western Countries) - it's not appropriate - DUH(!). And maybe in the future from inside China this will be viewed as inappropriate - when and if the collective ethical compass modifies its directions and/or tastes. But they are doing what they are doing (and what they think they can and must do) to make a statement about Chinese trade losses (in the immediate sense). It's an internal social statement of collective conformity - you had better do your individual job or else the whole country suffers (and this guy is getting executed for not honoring the collective-society, maybe).

I didn't check the links but I did read about this story the other day.

This guy took a LOT of money to allow pharmacuticals to be sold without the required testing.

I don't recall how many people died but IIRC it was in the double digits.  The death penalty for multiple murders is justified IMHO.

yes.  he had a responsability for the safety of potentially millions of people and he choose to put them in danger for his own personal gain, he didn't care if they died so why should anyone give a shit if he dies. One less selfserving bastard in the world.

you reap what you sow.

but I think the chinese are doing in more to make a statement that their products are save so it doesn't hurt their exports rather than as a morale statement.

Yeah the dealth penalty is kind of stupid. We should put unwanted babies in prison for life instead of aborting them.

At least they do something about corrupt politicians/regulators and whatnot. Sure, it's harsh. But at least they do something, here we are going "oh my that's bad" when we do jack shit about corrupt politicians and shit.

That country will be #1 soon enough.
