Right now, my system is this:

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6300
Memory: 2GB RAM
Hard Drive: 250 GB
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GS 550MHz/1.5GHz
Monitor: NEC 17" LCD Flatpanel
Operating System: Windows XP Media Center Edition

I was thinking of upgrading to this:

Memory: 2GB RAM
Hard Drive: 250 GB
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GS 550MHz/1.5GHz 8800GTS
Monitor: NEC 17" LCD Flatpanel 19" or 22"
Operating System: Windows XP Media Center Edition Installing Vista soon anyways

So basically I want a quad core and a better monitor and video card.
Is that a good choice of hardware to upgrade?

If I was you I would keep the monitor the same and invest in some other component such as a better processor or more RAM.

also I would stick with XP for now, they still working on getting all of the upgrades done for Vista.

quad core is hardly useful for the average gamer, even enthusiast gamers, for it to be useful you need like 4 monitors and 2 quadros etc.

There reaising the quad version of you cpu soon I think, basically more of the same, I dont think you/anyone needs it. Cool to have, but thats about it.

Certainly, get that 8800 GTS, I think everyone is in agreement that is what you should be buying at the moment, with a price/performance frame of mind. If you want to run on a 22'' it will need to be the 640mb GTS remember.

If you want to run vista, you may want to look into more RAM

At the very least, your graphics choice is what I'd do too

yeah if you getting a same brand monitor, which is only couple of inches bigger I would keep the one I have its not going to make that much of difference. you can use different types of software to allocate different applications on the monitor.

but yeah get more RAM or better processor

Another gig of RAM
New monitor (not nescessary, my parents want a 19" though)

Huh? That's probably the opposite of how I would do it.

The video card and monitor are the only upgrades big enough to actually give you a noticeable performance increase. It doesn't matter how "cheap" an extra gig of ram or quad core cpu is, you won't see any realistic performance gain over your current hardware. With Vista, you will only see a drop in performance.

Do not listen to a word Blademaster is saying.

I agree that you dont really need the extra ram or processor. Although saying that ram is rather cheap at the moment, I would perhaps consider looking at spending a bit more on a graphics card in the coming months...

Thats a pretty good system already. Like the others have said, new video card is probably the best upgrade. Also, like someone said, if you are getting a bigger monitor, get the 640MB 8800GTS. I have a 320MB one, and I think it definitely needs the extra memory on a higher res (I normally use 1280x1024 or 1600x1200).

CPU is fine for the moment, and 2GB of ram is fine.

So yeh, GPU -> monitor -> RAM

Don't buy anything but the monitor and card if you must, but I really recommend just sitting where you are until DX10 games come out. Your system is perfectly fine as it is. There is no immediate need to upgrade.

Vista is fine dude, most of the driver issues have been worked out. It's still a bit of a resource hog, but at least it utilizes the available resources in a better manner than it did in January

Have you used Vista yourself?

I have Vista 64bit installed in one of my computers and it is fine. Drivers work for all my hardware. I don't experience lower fps, no hiccups while playing.
