Hey guys!

I have a website for our Laser Tag facility in Sussex County, NJ.  I hope to start taking on memberships for my regular customers, and I would like to give them a forum where they can interact, and build a community.

How do I put a forum on my website?  This is my website.  I would simply add another button on the left there for FORUMS and work off that link.

What do I use?  and I need to know SQL?  Is there an easy way to do this?

I know, this is a lot, but as far as I'm concerned, between everyone in this community, you guys know more than anyone else on the planet anyway....

thanks guys

Does you your hosting allow you to run PHP and do you have a mysql instance availble? If yes you can download punbb (same as this board) for free.

You don't need to know Sql per say, just running some scripts

I personally would go with phpbb.  Its by far the easiest.  Its really simple to install too.

1. Make sure your host allows php and has an mysql or other databases open for you to use.
2. Upload the phpbb files to the dir you want to install the forums to.
3. Set the correct permissions on the folders witch allows phpbb scripts to install it self on the database and create files in the dir.
4. Run the install script witch is located at. phpbbdir/install/install.php
5. Fill out the required information so the phpbb forums can install on the database.
6. You will be asked to delete 2 dir one is the "install" dir and the other I can't remember.
7. Custimize your forums and have fun.

PunBB is simpler and faster in the long run. But for installation, PHPBB is easier.

Love to help and install your forum for you...but that wont happen as I have no computer.

NO! PUNBB SUCKS!

If you want a forum that has:
*Tons of templates
*Tons of modifications
*Tons of features

Go with either SMF forums or Phpbb2 (phpbb3 is good too but still in beta)

Go to www.phpbb.com or www.simplemachines.org for your forum software

trust me you wont regret going with phpbb, just look at www.phpbbhacks.com (hacks = modifications) there are approximatly 10 trillion templates and mods for phpbb.

Trust me ive used every kind of forum software including VB and IPB.

Not to mention the search feature on PunBB... sucks.... very bad...
the search on SMF is questionable too but much prefered in my oppinion.
the search on Phpbb is one of the best you can get.

Also i can help you set up your forum of choice, ive already helped FFLINK setup his forum, im sure he's got some nice things to say about my support

So have I. And seeing as I design and code websites, especially forums, I believe I have the upper hand on this conversation.

PunBB doesnt suck if you know how to use it. It does if you leave it "defaulted" and just let it run.
PunBB 3 will be great. So will PHPBB. But PHPBB is slow and very ugly. Unless you buy or get a very expensive template made for you.

Also, PunBB is easier to edit in every way.

Those "10 trillion" templates are poor and very ugly. Might as well learn some CSS and make it yourself. PunBB also has most mods that PHPBB has ( the most important and useful ones mainly ).

It is really up to you. If you want a fast, easily editable, simple forum then PunBB wins on that.
If you want a complicated, slower but more "full bodied" and a bigger help centre then go PHPBB.

Lol ive found so many awesome fully working free templates. look for yourself
http://www.phpbbhacks.com/templates.php

it takes a little bit of looking but you can find the perfect template for any type of forum.
Phpbb is ugly?? I assume you mean the default style is ugly? in that case look at punbb, the default templates suck, and the 'create a template' feature that the punbb site has sucks too. I believe im correct when i say not nearly as many people create templates for punbb than for phpbb.
Punbb may be easier to edit in ways but phpbb doesn't need to be edited, nor can the average forum admin edit php files in the first place no matter how easy.

EDIT: and furthermore, you act as if PhpBB is some slow forum, it might be a little bit slower for users with a shit internet connection, but thats easily justified by how much more you can do with Phpbb! Compare for yourself
New Phpbb forum: www.westlandsforum.com
Its a small bit slower then the punbb forum but not enough to really care about.

If you use that automatic style maker for PunBB then you are an idiot.

And for slower internet people, faster loading does make a difference.

But if you have a slow enough internet to really feel a big enough inpact to make you not use that forum, then you don't belong on the internet.
