...but it is about time something like this happened.

"A battle raged Thursday in west Baghdad after residents rose up against al-Qaida and called for U.S. military help to end random gunfire that forced people to huddle indoors and threats that kept students from final exams, a member of the district council said."

If this happens more and more often, there is going to be a serious battle about pulling out.......more than it is now.

I used to be skeptical, now i just know it's non-Iraqi's ruining that country. What a shame. Hopefully we'll see more of this. Those AQ bastards will be harder to get rid of the longer it takes. Real...annoying situation over there.

Turkey wants to help control (decide the fate of/take control of) Kurdistan (Northern Iraq, Southeastern Turkey), which has been a hotbed of insurgent Turk/Kurd activity against Turkey for years.

Well that's not that bad, they would deal with the extremists up north. Leaving the US to focus on other areas. They'd probably cause less tension with the locals too, seeing as they're the neighbour..

Wait...most neighbour countrys hate each others guts (India/Pakistan, Iraq/Iran, USA/Canada, Turkey/Cyprus..Or is that Turkey/Greece, or is that Greece and Cyprus...)

It will be interesting to see the US take on this.  On one hand, Turkey has been an ally of the US in the region for years.  At the same time, I have a hard time believing that US Intelligence/Armed Forces higher ups are keen on 'help' from Turkey.

Let me try to balance this news a bit..
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070531/ap_ … us_iraq_18
This is actually encouraging. Although September is still too optimistic in my mind.

US eyes cease-fires to end Iraq violence
WASHINGTON - The U.S. military is working more aggressively to forge cease-fires with Iraqi militants and quell the violence around Baghdad, judging that 80 percent of enemy combatants are "reconcilable," a top U.S. commander said Thursday.

However, Lt. Gen. Raymond Odierno also warned that he may not be able to make a full assessment of the situation in
Iraq by September, as demanded by lawmakers.

Odierno, the No. 2 U.S. commander in Iraq, told
Pentagon reporters by video conference that he is pressing his military officers to reach out to the tribes, to some small insurgent groups and to religious and political leaders to push them to stop the violence.

"We are talking about cease-fires, and maybe signing some things that say they won't conduct operations against the government of Iraq or against coalition forces," Odierno said from Camp Victory in Baghdad. "We believe a large majority of groups within Iraq are reconcilable and are now interested in engaging with us. But more importantly, they want to engage and become a part of the government of Iraq."

No, Turkey wants to stop kurd from inciting rebellion and causing chaos on the border. They're pretty peeved the only insurgents we care about in Iraq are the ones that bug us.

Spent a lot of time in Turkey, Most of which has been in the east. The Turks would like nothing more than to expand there war against the KDP, PKK or any number of other "rebel" Kurdish groups. I don't think things would go too well for the Turks if they made a foray into the KAZ of Northern Iraq (spent some time there too). I have spent some time along side of the Kurdish Peshmerga as well as Turkeys "professional" army of conscripts, and I honesty believe that the Turks would get a little more of a fight than they are expecting. Make no doubt that the Turks have a huge advantage in weaponry and numbers, but the Kurdish armies are a highly motivated and capable force.

The biggest issue with Turkey invading the KAZ is that the U.S. would have to pick sides and I am curious where our loyalties would go, and for those of you that think Turkey is a true Ally of the U.S, once the U.S. $$ dries up they are just like any other $5 whore...looking for their next trick

Gonna be interesting

Yikes, read today that Bush is looking to establish a long term presence in Iraq to hold an uneasy peace like in Korea. That's not exactly what much of the nation wanted to hear. Hell, I don't even think those who still support him want to stay that long.
