Ok. I chime in. Things to think about:

Bridge: look into a  Floyd Rose locking tremelo. Stays in tune but it is more difficult to change strings. Plus you can make the 'dive bomb' noises and it will stay in tune better.

Neck: 22 vs 24 frets. I like 24 frets for the two full playable octaves. You won't find yourself playing up there that often as a beginner but it is a good thing to grow into.

Tuner: Get one that you can plug your ax straight into. This will help your 'ear' develop, too.

You could spend you money on an effects pedal rather than a amp. Digitech makes good stuff. If you choose this route, get one with a 'jam-along' jack. You can input a CD/mp3 player and jam with your favorite music. The pedal will give you a huge variety of tones to explore. That way, you won't get bored by hearing the same distortion or acoustic. Below is just an example. It has USB connectivity.

Bottom line: Have fun. Get a few basics down. Play what you enjoy listening to.

Good luck.
He can worry about all that crap in a couple of years if he's still playing.

Since you like punk, get a cheap electric with an small amp. In a year or two if you're still playing and want to join a band, you can upgrade then. That gives you time to save up for something decent. And honestly, if you're playing punk, you don't really need great equipment. Punk is better when it's raw, anyway. Go rip it up, ff!
Whatever dude. I was offering a differnt perspective as everyone else focused on the guitar/amp. How could you not tell someone to worry about the bridge, frets or pick-ups (which I did not go into)? Grabbing something cheap can be a burden in the long run.

One will get very bored without the room for growth and flexibility.  Let's face facts: Guitars under $300 are all about average at best. It would tak a couple of days to come to this conclusion.  Now, if you're gonna just noodle, don't wast $1000 on something when much less will do the job. So if you're gonna go cheap, enhance in other areas. Otherwise, you'll find yourself bored and wanting the next level without the funds to get there. There is nothing worng with the $150 ax. You will outgrow it.

STOP STOP STOP STOP...

The world has enough guitar players...

what we guitar players need...

DRUMMERS...
BASS...
SINGERS.. (like Rob Halford)
SONG WRITERS
POETS...

I started with an Acoustic... (and I liked it)

So then I got an Electric w/amp...

Now I have 4 electrics,  1 bass, and a drumset...

I guess it all starts with what u like to listen to...

If you like rock and metal... go with electric...

If you like other music... then u like crappy music and you'll get no help from me....j/k lol.

otherwise. to the OP. Alright, I started with a Squier Strat pack just over 9 months ago. It sucked ass. I played it for 5 months and got my Schecter C-1 Classic. I noticed immeadiately that on the better guitar I was playing far more well than my friend was on his, and I haven't been playing as long as he has. I've also started to play acoustic guitars more because they are harder to use. The harder it is, the better you are on the easier to play. So, I'll get links to the guitars I have and the order in which I got them.

This is my first guitar, black scheme:

My second, I got it from a friend 3 months into my lessons, black scheme:

And my third guitar, the one I still have today, vintage sunburst scheme:

A squire guitar is a good choice to start with...

Then if you find you are a guitar player... upgrade.

you should also pick a a distortion pedal if theres no effects on the amp (apart from ghange gain, bass middle treble)
mine's a Zoom505II, which overly distorts most things but i can get some pretty sounding stuff considering it was cheap to buy
