Hurrah. I get my brand new Ipod out of the box, plug it in with itunes, put music on it, then when I try to disconnect it I get

"Ipod (Name) cannot be ejected because a file is in use"

Or atleast something to that effect, so I look on the apple website, no fucking mention of it at all.

Anyhoo.. Go-ooooo Ideas!

XXCVII: Dialogs that say a disk can't be ejected because it's in use, or that a file can't be deleted because it's in use, they don't say which application is using the file or disk. This is infuriating, 'cause sometimes you just have to randomly guess which application is using your file/disk, and you end up quitting all your apps before you find the culprit. Ugh. These dialogs should include the app that is using the file/disk.

did you make sure to hit "eject" and not just try to unplug it...?

edit: if you did, try quitting itunes first.

You can't eject if your not in iTunes

from the manual: If all else fails, just unplug it.

I've not used an iPod, but that's actually almost certainly a safe thing to do.

(but don't blame me if it breaks your iPod)

Is there any app out there that will show me what programs are using what files?

I'm 90% sure you can just unplug your Ipod right now.  I doubt it's really that big of a deal to unplug every once in a while.  That's what I did and mine is fine.

I have, but I really dont like the idea of ripping it out everytime I need to plug it in.

Yeah, because I'm totally going to accept the words of a stranger who presented a weak argument without any fact.

Yeah, not always a good idea. I used to do it every time just out of pure absent-mindedness. The last time I did, my Ipod nearly died. It started whirring and beeping, and I had to give it mouth to mouth. Seriously though, it can fuck it up.

Have you tried ending task on Itunes and then running it again and trying to eject again? You could just try ending task on all applications, doing it one by one and working out which one it was for future reference.

I don't like iPods. They have poor connectivity with their PCs, they tend to freeze up and die too often for my liking, and they don't have a removable battery, so if your battery dies, you have to send it in to be refurbished.

I tend to go with Creative products. Creative is THE name in digital sound, they have been around in the industry FAR longer than Apple, in fact, Creative had MP3 players out a year & a half before the iPod. In fact, Creative OWNS the patents to Apples software, because it was ruled too similar to Creative's. I would say if you are interested in a creative, go with a ZenMicroPhoto, but they just recently stopped production on them. If you are looking to replace an Ipod, I would go with the Zen Vision: M. Its a little chunkier than an iPod, but I like them better.

Agreed, not to turn this into an mp3 player debate, but I've used both, and I find the Zen Vision M to be overall better than the iPod. Better sound quality, better interface, better computer software, better lcd screen (more colors than the iPod supports), and it has a removable battery (voids the warranty if you do it, but if you have one that's past it's warranty, what does it really matter anyway.)

Not trying to convert you, but consider other alternatives for your next mp3 player purchase (Zune, Rio, Zen etc).
