yeah, my PSU fused itself to the mobo in multiple places, and decided to stop working (obviously). no, i wasnt oc'n or anything, i think it was just a surge or something (yes, surge protector, but we've had some lightning storms recently).

so heres what im planning on upgrading/replacing. i have about $450-500 to work with (the cheaper the better, but i don't want to half-ass it.

motherboard (im liking the looks of the 680i chipset, evga?),
PSU (2x 12v),
case (something cheap that looks snazzy, mid tower, not A900)
CPU (intel, is the 3060 really better then the 6600?),
and cooler (thinkin of the artic 7 b/c price/performance).

suggestions would be great...

hopefully i can get all this by next week, just in time for me to leave for China and not play/do anything for a month (yaay).

If you don't SLi get 650i, if you do 680i is best. PSU, can you can find some good 2x strong PSUs on newegg (ocz, antec, thermaltake, apparently FSP are okay, corsair now makes great PSUs) the 6420 is about the same in 6600 performance and cheaper. centurion 5s look interesting, it has a lot of reviews but I don't know, its up to you.

650i is still a SLi board, you're still going to pay a premium for a SLi board. I'm always saying this, but its true, if you don't want SLi wait for a P35 to come on Newegg and get that.

Get a good name brand for the PSU, like MECtallica's recommendations.

Other than that, you can't go wrong with your good name brands!

Edit: where abouts are you going in China?

The word on the street is Intel CPU's will be dropping in price in late July - read this on tomshardware the other day but don't remember which article. You may want to hold your purchase for 3-4 weeks here if that is the case.

Things I would not go cheap on in your list above are PSU first and mobo second. Buying a $100 PSU can be worth it if you buy wisely. You can just keep using the same supply in case after case. I like antec or enermax myself and have been glad to pay double compared to a cheap psu,  because my families and friends cheap PSU's keep burning out every 6months! Obviously you are not going cheap on the CPU which is good, anything less than a Core2Duo isn't worth buying right now when you compare price/performance. A cheap case is just user preference so that's fine, just make sure it isn't going to run hot.

Buying a mobo can be a tough choice, it depends on what your looking for, how much you will pay, and how much research you are willing to do. The biggest thing is to avoid mobos that are notoriously faulty by doing enough research on sites like anandtech tomshardware overclockers and newegg for user reviews.

A final note, in Canada we don't have access to a lot of the new brands, like metallica mentioning thermaltake or OCZ psu's and stuff. We don't get that here easily (you could order from the states and pay all sorts of customs bullshit) so I can't really comment on those, but just do your research and you will be happy you did - your rig will be much more stable, less frusteration, and if you buy wisely you can overclock it as the months pass to keep up with the latest bullshit a little bit longer then a non-OC rig.
