This relates to illegal immigration, free trade, and US Economic/Foreign Policy

"Recently, in many regions of Mexico, tortilla prices jumped by more than 50 per cent....In part the price-hike threat to the food staple for Mexican workers and the poor is what we might call the ethanol effect — a consequence of the US stampede to corn-based ethanol as an energy substitute for oil, whose major wellsprings, of course, are in regions that even more grievously defy international order."

"In the United States, too, the ethanol effect has raised food prices over a broad range, including other crops, livestock and poultry..."

A leading goal of US foreign policy has long been to create a global order in which US corporations have free access to markets, resources and investment opportunities. The objective is commonly called "free trade," a posture that collapses quickly on examination...."

"Despite the huge, taxpayer-supported agricultural subsidies, the prices of corn — and tortillas — have been climbing rapidly. One factor is that industrial users of imported US corn increasingly purchase cheaper Mexican varieties used for tortillas, raising prices....

"One-sixth of the Mexican agricultural work force has been displaced in the NAFTA years, a process that is continuing, depressing wages in other sectors of the economy and impelling emigration to the United States. Max Correa, secretary-general of the group Central Campesina Cardenista, estimates that "for every five tons bought from foreign producers, one campesino becomes a candidate for migration."

Is Chomsky just an extremist nutjob, or is anything he is saying worth taking another look at?

From the latest issue of Foreign Affairs Magazine -

The Ethanol Bubble
"Summary:  Thanks to high oil prices and hefty subsidies, corn-based ethanol is now all the rage in the United States. But it takes so much supply to keep ethanol production going that the price of corn -- and those of other food staples -- is shooting up around the world. To stop this trend, and prevent even more people from going hungry, Washington must conserve more and diversify ethanol's production inputs."

Seems like Noam Chomsky isn't the only critic of our agricultural subsidies.

Sure, the US tries to do better by the environment with ethanol and be less dependent on the evil fossil fuels.  Yet we still get to be the bad guy because now the price of corn is going up.  This is a perfect example of why we shouldn't make policy decisions according to world opinion.

From everything I've heard and read that is true. Corn prices are indeed up and would have all of the effects that he described. There are more sources for alternative fuels from agriculture, they're growing a type of grass here in Oklahoma in which much more ethanol can be yielded from it than corn. They shouldn't be using a food staple to get fuel from anyway.

If by "world opinion" you mean one of the most respected foreign policy dissidents (Noam Chomsky) and one of the most influential (if not the most) foreign policy groups (Council on Foreign Relations/Foreign Affairs Magazine) then yes.

Basically, no.  It is not just that the price of corn is going up that is the issue.  It's that the price of corn is going up artificially due to subsidies the US Government allocates for the corn industry.  It is not just ethanol.  Look at everything you eat; at least 50% contains some sort of corn product.  Furthermore, the price of corn going up is linked to numerous world markets.

So we are basically solving our oil problem and ensuring that more Mexican people starve to death...

sounds like a win-win scenario to ATG

How about: "US voluntarily plunges itself into another depression to avoid stepping on toes, yet jobs are lost and non-Americans go hungry as they lose a major business partner."

How many times have I said on this forum that ethanol is bullshit?  At least twice off the top of my head, but no one listens.  Al Gore tells you to put corn in your car and smoke it and you follow without even beginning to consider the fact that you're getting technical advice on energy from a lawyer/politician.  This man listens to the scientific opinions he likes only and tries to sell you all a balanced and complete opinion based on that.  The worst part is you all just follow like sheep to put grain in your gas tank.
You get half the energy per kilogram of ethanol as you do for gasoline (appx. 26.8MJ depending on density to 45MJ).  And yet some people will rush to tell you that using a gallon of ethanol displaces 7 gallons of foreign gasoline.  How is that so?  It seems to me from this math that a gallon of ethanol (equal to one third of a bushel of corn, or about 3 gallons by volume of corn) would only replace one half of a gallon of gasoline.  I really do not see what is so appealing about this sort of thing when there exist other technologies to achieve cleaner emissions and less economic destruction to our food prices.

US still has tons of land for crops, if it was used for it's full potential, I bet it would solve this problem.
