Was reading this article: If U.S. Leaves, Al-Qaeda Will Not Inherit Iraq

and got me thinking.  We know that the Iraqis will more than likely kill each other en masse, but will al-qaeda make a foot hold?  According to the latest reports Iraqis are turning in al-aqada operatives more and more often - local mullas are actively helping the coalition forces more frequently.

Basically I'm asking: Are we the 'salt lick'?

Understood, that goes without saying, but will the popular notion that al-qaeda actually take root and be another Afganistan, but with Iraqi oil instead of poppy crops funding their cause?

P.S. Not to get too of topic, but we should had gone in there with 400,000 troops on day 1.  Rumsfeld was an idiot.

Are you referring to Turkey's war drums against the Kurds to the north?  I believe the Military minister in Turkey said that they are ready and waiting to attack Northern Iraq whenever they are authorized to do so.

no doubt.
besides them, iraq has acted as a buffer for the entire middle east for a very long time.
when we go, the shit will hit the fan.

When we leave, they'll stay and try to build a recruitment farm.

yes, they'll just blow iraq up until theres no-one left. come to think of it how many suicide bombers are there left?, there can't be many if they keep killing themselves off.

You don't think they're trying as we speak?...

I really don't see any major difference in our danger as citizens whether we leave or stay in Iraq.

The only significant difference is that if we leave...  we won't be spending $2 billion a week on a futile occupation.
