For those who are interested or curious.

*Has to do with laptops*

A bit of background info - With the release of the Santa Rosa chipset (Intel raised the FSB of the mobile C2D to 800Mhz), nVidia released it's line of DX10 GPUs, the 8600 and 8400. The 8600m GT is currently the most powerful DX10 card out right now, but still considerably weaker than the Go 7950 GTX. NVidia's plan for a mobile 8800 card didn't work out so well; the original G80 chip consumed massive amounts of power and basically ran too hot - I think it melted the notebook mobos.

Here it is!

List of nVidia's Mobility GPUs (Note that the "enthusiast" series i.e. 8800 will be out this summer)

They're most likely going to be found exclusively on 17"+ notebooks. There's a possibility that they could be on 15.4", but highly unlikely - too much heat.

ATI seriously needs to get their act together. The only Mobility Radeon GPUs I see frequently in most laptops are the X1400, X1600, and X1700 - none of which are in the top tier of notebook GPUs which is pretty much dominated by nVidia atm. The X1800 and X1900, their only high end mobility Radeons, are extremely rare. And ATI still hasn't released any laptop DX10 GPUs for consumers.

Absolute complete waste of cash. Buying it now is still pretty crazy on a desktop machine where it can be replaced, but on a notebook - that is just stupid! Within 6 months, the 8800GTX will be significantly cheaper and there will be better cards out for the price an 8800GTX is today. Anyone who even thinks about putting a notebook version of an 8800 is just plain stupid.

ATi are in the process of X2900s.. didn't you hear or something? (Mobility)

Well, apart from the great power consumption and heat problems, theres nothing wrong, therse always really really rich people out there who are ready to pay 10 million dollars for an alienware laptop with GTX's in SLI.

FFS it's actually getting annoying now; obviously, notebooks don't have the same power as desktops, so stop comparing the two together goddamnit. Why can't you realize that there are people out there who don't want to be tethered to an outlet all the time? The whole point of having a laptop is for portability and mobility, and if people want the most out of their portability is it really that stupid? NO! I'll be damned if these people are considered stupid for wanted the most out of what they could get. If people wanted fucking desktop graphics cards only, why the hell would nVidia and ATI make mobile versions of their cards?

Let me reword that ATI bit - "ATI has yet to release a consumable DX10 GPU, I know they've announced it, but no one can buy it yet."

While I agree to some extent that Alienware prices their laptops at ridiculous prices, there are other manufacters that have SLI capable laptops at a cheaper price. Plus, the two SLI notebooks that Alienware have on their site as of now, have single core processors - not worth the price IMO.
