Well, as mentioned before there is the genetics problem, but not its unlikely that enough people would practice it for that to be an issue.  On the other hand, if those who practiced polygamy didn't bring in any new gene sets, then it could be an issue with in a few generations.

The more likely problem would be the social issue of "not enough to go around".  Theoretically, we could go from people the occasional crime of passion because a certain someone is taken, to the more frequent crime of passion because no one is avalible.

What man would want more than one wife?

I believe the religious aspect has contributed to it being free to believe in but not practice, but humanity is responsible for us not doing it.
Man has one rod. Woman has one slot (debatable). For the most part, that's all you need. Anything else is superfluous for humans.

You misunderstand. "Evil" is not the implication, its the fact that Islam as faith still adopts conventions that existed centuries ago in mainstream western society, and which are no longer accepted.

1. Most western nations are based on the christian value system, even if most western societies today are not as bound by religious views as, let's say, 100 years ago. "1 man + 1 woman = marriage" is still the most universally accepted form of sanctioned partnership though.

2. it would create a shitload of legal problems, regarding a wide field of issues, like taxes, insurance, divorce, etc..

3. the "gene pool" issue that has been adressed here, could be a problem, but only if those practising polygamy would not bring in "fresh blood" from outside their community, i.e. if they'd only marry within the confines of their community, or direct relatives. It's the size and genetic diversity of he community that matters here.

4. in more general terms, the ways we look at relationships have always changed over time, and those changes have happened quicker in recent history. Just look at the progress we have made in the last century alone, compared to the thousands of years before that.
Not so long ago ( in historical terms ), getting a divorce was practically impossible, and regarded as a social stigma. Living together with your partner in a relationship without being married was a no-go, and being gay was actually illegal, even in some of the more "advanced" western nations.
But times have changed, and it is well possible that polygamy may one day be an accepted practise in western societies. Will it happen ? and if yes, how soon ? Who knows....

All I know is, that, for me personally it would be impossible to live in a polygamous relationship. But what do I know ? My views are the result of my genes and my social upbringing.  If I had been born in the middle ages, for example, I'd probably consider burning red-haired women at the stake acceptable.

It's all a matter of perspective.

Fuck you, it's never okay to burn redheads. I've got a thing for chicks with red hair.

So fuck you.

It may have been made illegal due to the Church's and Christian influence on common law and morals of judges and politicians. Also, historically, as women didn't work, I think it was rational polygamy be made illegal due to the fact that it would be impossible for a civilian man to bring in enough money and food to support more than one wife and more than one set of kids. Hence legalising it would have allowed a social wrong to occur and would be unfair on the women and the children. This is supported I think by the historical fact that it was the rich who often had the ability to support a polygamous relationship.

If you think about it, why is it that all the love stories and songs are about one man and one woman? I believe that this is due not to legal restriction, but just the nature of human beings to become attached and infatuated with one person. Of course, the "bored" will readily take onboard more wives, but "true love" is always between two people.

Except that the west has never openly accepted multiple wive.  They just go with mistresses instead.
