Hey!

as the title says, my game freezes sometimes. if it does it is usually within the first 2 minutes, i gotta reboot and then ztry again. funny is that soemtimes i play for like 4 hours, no problem, sometimes it happens like 15 times in a  row?

i updated pb manually, ran anti virus scan and so on, im thinking it could be my power supply?

thx guys!

it would help allot if you posted your system specs, and when did the problems start?

And what game it is (otherwise it will be assumed you're talking about BF2).

And when you say it freezes, can you Alt+Tab out of the game or does your entire system hang? I get the later in 2142 and don't know why.

sry i didnt get any more specific, my bad!

aight, my specs: 2.8 P4, MSI Neo mainboard VIA chipset, 6600GT GFX card, 420 PSU from DELUX, 1G KINGSTON Hyper-X Gaming RAM

the game is BF2 indeed, however, i did experience it with anno 1701 too. what im thinking is its either my PSU that screwes up or my gxf card, cuz i read through alot of posts, and around 90% of all the ppl experiencing the same problem have a 6600GT as well. i also read that going into dxdiag and changing something called hardwareaccelaror (under sound 1) to standard can help...didnt try that though cuz i dont wanna screw up my machine even more...

also, i tried turning of my antivirus (Avira AntiVir) and my firewall (windows one), but it seems that it doesnt have an effect, as my game keeps freezing with both on and off. oh, and no, i cannnot alt+tab, i gotta reboot the hard way....

My gfx options:

resolution: 1024x768

terrain: medium
effects: low
gemotry: high
textures: medium
lighting: low
dynamic shadows: off
dynamic lights: off
anti-analising: off
texturefiltering: medium
view distance: 100%

OK, I'm not the sort to normally shout "GET ANOTHER GIG OF RAM!" for no good reason, other than it appears to have worked for me, but...

GET ANOTHER GIG OF RAM!

I had the same issue as you. Couldn't track it down - everything tested just fine - no other serious issues - just random game freezes. And then I updgraded to 2Gig. And, so far (touch wood, fingers crossed, kiss rabbits foot) I've not had a single freeze-up and I've increased my graphics settings a notch or two and I still notice the performance improvement in-game.

could be that you have exceed your physical ram so your PC is resorting to virtual ram, which is slower. Could be overheating, could be that your specs are to high. Could try to defrag. Scan for virusses. And thats all I can think off for now.

I seriously doubt that the 8600GT M in the laptop will be any better than the 6600GT. I also have a 6600GT with 128MB (PCIe) and I play 1280x1024 with everything on medium except for dynamic effects and anti-aliasing (which are all off). I've also played with 1 gig of ram for quite some time, and I've only got a 3.0Ghz processor. I've never experienced anything similar.

This happened to me with my 6600. Eventually i replaced it with my old FX5500 (which meant no more BF2) and it worked for abit but then i still used to get it. I even used to get it whilst browsing the internet afterwards. Total freeze, nothing could stop it. I then took that out and started using my onboard card again. So either my AGP slot was broken, or my PSU suddenly stopped and couldn't handle anything external.

Now, this onboard video can handle games like Half Life and Serious Sam, although when doing the most intensive stuff it freezes again. Which makes me beleive that it just might be PSU related. My advice? Get a better PSU. I'm not getting one though as it doesn't freeze anymore, but when i get a new computer, i'm going to make sure it has a quality PSU, not this microATX shit i have right now.
