You will NOT have to shell out for a top end graphics card to play Crysis. You WILL have to shell out if you want to play it with DX10 and all settings maxed out on anything abouve 1280 x 1024.

It really depends what you want, but remember like Proffiteroles says if you buy a top end GPU you may need to look at overclocking or upgrading your CPU as it may bottleneck the performance.
I don't know about that link. How can someone talking about a 8950GX2 be taken seriously about all the other stuff he has to say?

Ofcourse you are right about the DX9 vs DX10 thing, if the OP just wants to play Crysis then a normal 7600 card will do the trick.

Why dont you just wait until it comes out? What a great idea that is!

8800GTX  ---> probably the best high-end card up to date price wise, beaten only by the 8800 Ultra by a tiny fraction in most cases. With this monster you should expect to be able to max out Crysis @ 1280 x 1024 16xAA (good FPS), up to a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1200 (good -> very good FPS).

8800GTS ---> a great card if you are on a budget. In Crysis the 8800GTS is most likely going to be limited by its processing power not its VRAM. You should expect these settings regardless of whether you have the 320 or 640MB.
I think with this card you should expect maximum settings @ 1280 x 1024 no AA (good FPS), probably up to a resolution of 1680 x 1050 (acceptable -> good FPS).

8600GTS ---> a mediocre card which is slightly cheaper than an 8800GTS 320MB. With this card you should expect to be able to run Crysis with mostly high settings @ 1280 x 1024 no AA (acceptable -> good FPS).

Low-end budget cards:-

8600GT ---> this card out performs a 7600GT but only by a little way. With this card you should be able to run the game on medium settings, some on low @ 1024 x 768 no AA (good FPS).

8500GT ---> this card is a very poor performer and is probably comparable to a 6800GT. With this card you should be able run Crysis on low settings @ 1024 x 768 no AA (acceptable -> good FPS).

Pretty much what i predicted

You need to know what Size monitor he has and what sort of budget.

8500gt will run crysis on low settings up to a 15-17in monitor getting 30-50fps -- cost £50 $90

8600gts will run crysis on medium-some on high settings up to a 17-20 inch monitor getting 40-60 fps -- cost £90 $160

8800gts will run crysis on high settings up to a 20-24 inch monitor getting 60-90 fps -- cost £180 $300

8800gtx will run crysis with every setting on max on a 24 inch+ monitor getting 100+ fps -- cost £370 $550
You are so wring its not even funny.

Yes in DX9 mode you can run it at high, but ever the 8800GTX is strugling with Crysis on high DX10. Sorry to burst your bubble.

Where are you getting that from? There's pretty much no official information on this yet, but from what little has come out an 8800GTX will be fine on high settings.

And to Profitteroles.....that card will probably be fine, but you have to make the distinction between DX9 and DX10 to the OP.

Yes you are right i didn't say about O/S or DX10 but from what i understand the DX10 cards perform better in DX10 mode that they will in DX9 end of the day its what they were built and optimised for.

Yes it should work but the only problem you have with that is if you have 2 buddies that have DX10 cards you wont be able to play in the same servers as them unless they switch to DX9 which im sure they wouldn't be happy doing

Well you're wrong there. Company of Heroes is available in DX10 and runs significantly slower in DX10 than in DX9.

Lost Planet also appears to run slower in DX10 than DX9.

(that could be driver related though)

Just did a bit off googling and i stand corrected lets hope with some new drivers they can close the gap a little

Yes the link you posted is on about DX9 high. DX 10 is a lot slower. This information i all i can gather from alot of "leaked" bench marks. Of course they cannot be trusted fully but do give a good idea.

Look on the futuremark forums for more info.

I think once Vista has had a few updates, and DX10/Graphics drivers have been tweaked, DX10 will be faster.

All i know about how the different DX's will effect the game is that Crysis will be having 2 types of online server those that have DX9 and those that have DX10.

The difference in these servers will be something along the lines of DX9 = minimal enviromental destruction, and DX10 = Fully destructable enviroment.

As far as i have heard DX10 users will also be able to acsess the DX9 servers.

I'll be waiting for it to come out before i upgrade anything, tho i will be leaning towards high end DX10.

Well, the Beta should be out soon (and will probably become the most redistributed, hacked up Beta ever). We'll get a good idea of performance then.
