Anyone know a good program to compress the huge files that fraps outputs?
You need a tool to encode and compress the video and simply the best for free AVI editing is VirtualDub by Avery Lee (Open source and 100% free) or VirtualDubMod which is an extended version with additional format support and is also free.Canadian_Sniper_X wrote:

You also need all the codecs you wish to use. Codecs are" CO-mpressors DEC-ompressors". If you want to stay very simple and get awesome results use Xvid and X264. Xvid is an open source codec that many consider better than Divx. X264 is an MPEG-4 AVC codec and is quite simply the finest codec we currently have for video compression and quality. It is also 100% free.
Heres the Links and some guides on Doom9 on how to use VirtualDub:

http://virtualdubmod.sourceforge.net/
http://www.koepi.org/xvid.shtml - XVID Binaries
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=89979 - Latest X264 Build
http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/virtua … edures.htm - How to use VirtualDub
http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/xvid-vdub-final.htm - Encoding to Xvid with VirtualDub (X264 is exactly the same, just different codec)
Believe me, once you get the hang of using these tools you'll be amazed at what you can get for quality.
I hope that helps.
Edit -
I just noticed the Xvid encoding tutorial is based on using AviSynth and GordianKnot (tools for automating video processes). They are also free and you can download them from Doom9 as well. They are not needed to encode the video though, VDub loads many file formats and the uncompressed Fraps video is a breeze for it to handle.
I think I'll write a tutorial on using VDub to Encode Fraps captures.

Thanks Cryan...mod status 4 joo.

Lol I know how to use winzip... definitely not what I was looking for. But it's the thought that counts
lol I don't know much about compressing, so don't expect me to have a thousand links ready at hand.
Just another note. I find that wmv seems to be the best format for keeping the files relatively small at a good quality when posting to video sharing sites. These two were very small in wmv format.

This was about the same size in mpg and it wasn't nearly as crisp
So for me it's always wmv before I upload.
