SATA I and II

Bonjour.

Basically there are 2 types of serial ATA hard drives:

SATA I - 1.5 Gbit/s and SATA II - 3.0 Gbit/s

I know that a SATA II hard drive is backwards compatible with a SATA I motherboard connector.

The question I'm asking is..... is a SATA I hard drive compatible with a SATA II slot on a motherboard.

(I can't seem to find a convincing answer on google).

Nope.

That's a SATA II drive into a SATA I motherboard.

My situation is the other way round.

oh well ... can't find anything on it ... but tbh i'd guess not - as it's an older hard drive which was made before the newer motherboard

Nope, I bet that pissed you right off! I'm guessing and I haven't read all the posts but the DQ6 mobo has problems routing the monitor pic on some of the new boards. I think you should RMA it if you've tried everything else.

Yes. You can plug a SATA1 drive into a SATA2 mobo.

And the otherway round. Both ends (drive and controller/mobo) are fully backwards compatible.

In your case, the controller will automatically downgrade to SATA1.

EDIT:

Grr... I can't find the FAQ on the hitatchi website that I found when I was looking into the question of inter-compatibility between SATA1/2 HDDs/mobos. Anyway, basically, they're fully inter-compatible.

Not sure. I would have thought not. But it may vary from mobo to mobo - what mobo do you have?

No, it will work straight away. Just make sure to set drive priorities etc in the BIOS.

As far as I can tell, from reading the pdf of your mobos manual - there's no jumpers or bios settings that you need to set - you should just be able to plug a SATA1 drive into any of the SATA2 ports and it should just work.

yeah it should work just fine. i run a sata I drive on a sataII port no problems, no settings just plug it in and it works.
