Ok, so I have two HD's, one is a ATA one is SATA.  Both have windows XP installed and both have information I want on them.  The ATA is the one currently as the master on my gaming rig and the SATA is coming out of a HP that I want to break down and take the drives out of, and maybe some USB ports, and donate the rest to a charity here in town.  My problem comes from the fact that I can't access the files on my SATA drive (250 GB) and it is too large to copy over and I can't have windows installed on a "second" machine to the harddrive.  I really don't want two copies of windows on one machine but I do want the extra storage and my Norton system works from the HP on the gaming rig. Is there anyway to do this?

you can use RAID have two different size HD's but its the pain in the but installing all of the components. The raid will use ur smaller size HD and adjust the bigger HD to that size. For example if you have an 250HD and a 80GB HD, RAID will adjust it so you have two 80GB Hard drives.

that'll screw me, out of the total of 330 GB I only have maybe 110 free which is 220, 60 more then a raid would give me... this sucks.  I might have to splurg a little again, really didn't want to.

he can, but he wants to have only 1 copy of XP, not 2.

Meh... i really don't know, can you copy the files off the small one onto the large one then use that?

you might, might, be able to do it with Partition Magic, but i really don't know- you might be able to create 2 partitions on the large HD, move all the non-windows (savable) stuff onto one of the created partitions, and the format the windows partition....

I'm still confused - why not just delete the copy of windows that he don't want? Simple.

Or I must be missing something...

its not letting my access the documents under the user accounts on the SATA drives and I want to.  The Hard drives are from different computers so they both think they are the only HD and well, i'm confused as to what to do so its not making it any easier to explain.

Point your BIOS's boot order to the hard drive that has the Windows installation you want to keep. Go into Windows and delete the copy of Windows on the other hard drive. From there, perform a bit of file surgery, putting all media and data you want to keep into a new folder, and deleting the rest. Defrag.

You need to log in under an admin account. That should get you access to the data directories.

If not, you need to reset the security settings on the SATA partitions:

1. right click on a partition drive in explorer and select 'Properties'.
2. under 'Security' tab, click 'Advanced'.
3. under 'Owner' tab, in the 'Change owner to' list, select 'Administrators (...)'.
4. check the 'Replace owner on all subcontainers and objects' checkbox.
5. click OK.
6. click OK.

If you can't see the 'Security' tab then you need to disable 'simple sharing' in Windows Explorer:

1. in Explorer, select Tools->Folder options.
2. under 'View' tab, 'Advanced settings', scroll right to bottom.
3. uncheck 'Use simple file sharing'.
4. click OK.

Are you using Vista or XP?

If Vista, sorry should have said those instructions are for XP - I don't know Vista.

If XP, then, from the sound of it, your login account doesn't have full admin privileges - you need to log in under an admin account.

You are looking in Windows Explorer Tools->Folder Options, not Internet Explorer, aren't you?

What about the Security tab in the drive properties dialog? I take it you can't see that either?

Computers aren't all that hard to learn about really - once you get a few basic principles under your belt the rest is pretty straight-forward.

From what you said, it does still sound to me that you don't have full admin rights on that drive for some reason. So, without the PC right-in-front of me, I'm stumped.

When your more knowledgeable buddy takes a look at it, ask them to show you what they're doing - that's the best way to learn - by seeing how to solve a specific problems.
