Why is Douglass MacArthur regarded in such high esteem?

He was a war hungry ego maniac who would micro manage battles without having any idea about the field of battle. Sure the best generals are generally the ones with a ego problem but this guy doesn't even seem to have any great strokes of military genius to his name but is held up as some US uber-general.

I think the point being made is that MacArthur wasn't actually that good a strategist or tactician. You can win plenty of battles with a bad general, just so long as those beneath can compensate for it.

when he went to the military academy and was in the war in europe he was good enough, but when he got to korea and the end of ww2 I think he began getting a megalomania problem and thinking that he knew best in all situations because he had done so good in former battles and in his own life. in korea though he began to take bad decisions and overruling the congress and trying to drop A-bombs on the kommunist forces.

so in short: when he entered the korea war he began to go nuts.

Have posted my opinion with evidence before - sad megalomaniac loser with no military skill whatsoever. Phillipine Air Force devastated just after Pearl Harbour under his command, Bataan, pissing off to Melbourne and staying there for YEARS, slagging off Aussie militia who stopped the Japs at Kokoda with no equipment or training and few supplies, ffs people, read about it, there's so much material on this stuff available.
