A little background:

I work for an airline that offers ten $10 seats on every flight we have. So you can go to various cities on the west coast, east coast, and Florida for $20 dollars round trip. (plus taxes)

The one thing is, you pay for what you want. You want a soda..you pay. You want a powerbar or sandwich...you pay.

Why is this so bad?

I have heard Southwest Airlines commercials targeting us for that. I just do not get it. Do you get a free soda and peanuts when you hop in a cab? Which by the way will cost you more than one of our flights.

Where did this come from? Why do people not demand anything like that except when they are on an airplane? I understand if you paid hundreds of dollars for a flight, but 20 bucks for a direct non-stop flight and you want stuff for free?

Ryanair very similar. Negative advertising is prohibited here in Europe so that could never happen. It actually makes me sick when I see that kind of shit on TV in America - especially in political advertisements.

Last time I was in New York there was an advertisment: 'Governor Pataki - Possibly criminal'. Unbelievable.

I really don't care about the adverts tbh. But why do people feel like this only on airplanes? You buy a $40 ticket to a football game, do you demand free drinks?

Maybe the culture in America hasn't shifted yet. Here in Europe low fares airlines rule the roost and all that gets bitched about is their timekeeping. You get what you pay for.

Hey people are just expessing how the big corps are exploiting everything for every single cent they can.
A corp goes out and makes billions of dollars by doing whatever. If you feel even the LEAST bit cheated by this business, you'll want them to pay every chance you get.
I'm not saying it's right, but I'm saying that's how people feel. I'm not even going to defend it by saying it's wrong behavior... I know it is, but I do it myself.
If I get a ticket for illegal parking because I park in front of my own house (which is now illegal due to road sanitizing and what the f***), I throw a couple of rocks in the grinder aswell. I will complain, take the matter to every single appeal option I have, I'll pay the fee late, and I'll pay it in cash (with pennies) just to screw the city over, making it three times as costly to collect the parking ticket, than what the actual ticket is for ! Some thing if I feel cheated by anyone else.

Big business may be here to stay, but if they want to fuck over the little guy to make a buck, I'll make DAMNED sure I give at least as good as I get, or go down trying. Corporate greed is NASTY stuff, and if this is my only way to fight it I will.

The airlines though... They've been through enough already, most have hit on hard times (at least here in europe), and hitting someone who's down is still a bit more than I'll want a part of. So I'd never pull this stuff on an ethical company, or a small business. Double standards, you betcha.... But like I said, I'm not saying I'm not being a bitch about it myself. I'm just saying, that some people drawn the line elsewhere than I do, and if they think complaining about free peanuts for a $10 is their little rebellion again "the man", then by all means let them complain.

I think the problem is not that SkyBus charges you for food or drink in flight, the problem is more that they want you to throw away any of your own food or drink before getting on the plane.

Same goes for movie theaters a few years ago.

Can you bring your own food to a restaurant? Your own beer to a bar?

No, but if I don't like the amount that restaurant charges me for food, or don't like the food they have to offer I can walk down the street somewhere else. Tough to do at 35,000 ft.

Nobody is forced to fly, or forced to fly cheap. If you got the money, by all means spend it how you like.

You get what you pay for. The amount you want to pay is up to you.

No they aren't. I bring lots of food on flights I paid full-fare for. Again, I said there was not really a problem with them charging for food sold on flights, it will suck if they start being a little more fascist about people bringing their own food.

Air New Zealand used to give you a full fucking meal for every flight - that's domestic flights within New Zealand. You hardly had enough time to unwrap the bloody thing before you had landed. It was stupid and was a cost that people buying airline tickets didn't want to pay for and fair enough too. Why incorporate the cost of things you don't want into the cost of flying?

As to your scenario marine, if anyone's complaining about anything when they're getting a ten dollar flight I think that counts as an open invitation to kick them in the gonads.

I will say one thing, we do not fly for free, I have to pay like everyone else. A couple weeks ago, I flew to L.A. I woke up Saturday morning, and about 8 hours later I was at the end of the Santa Monica Pier looking out at the Pacific Ocean...for 20 bucks round trip. That was very cool. So IMO, the other airlines can keep their free sodas.

I think that people have just gotten used to getting free snacks and refreshments on flights. If they're so blind that they can't see they are saving money, then hopfully they won't procreate.

I believe one method of Skybus is that they essentially rent out space on the livery (paint job) of the aircraft for ads. On Wikipedia there was a photo of a Skybus jet with a Nationwide ad on it; it looked pretty good since it engulfed a few windows inside the Nationwide square logo.

edit: To anyone else wondering, Wiki says it's around $500K a year for advertising on their jets. Furthermore, they use lower flight attendant wages but in return the attendants get a share of any in-flight sales.

And Marine, the business method sounds perfectly reasonable. If free food and drink matters so much on a 3 hour flight, by all means pay a bunch for an American flight. If you're the "Eat a few muffins and have a Frappucino" type, then it only makes sense to take the cheaper flight.

I wouldn't say that is the case. Business travelers will travel on the big guys because they go to the heart of the big cities and price is not really a concern.

But, the other day I was walking through the terminal on my way to the airplane. Some lady stopped me because she saw my airline ID badge. She said she was taking her family, which was like 7 people, to a wedding in October. She said there was no way she could afford to bring everyone until now. That actually felt kind of good, to be able to offer someone that.

It is going good so far. Still trying to iron out all the wrinkles. Starting any business from the ground up is tough. But starting an airline should automatically stamp your ticket to the funny farm.

My most recent trip was to Washington, D.C. on American Airlines. Thieving goats. $239 bucks, $15 bucks for a sandwich.

The financially stressed airlines hate competition, so they cry and moan about change, me thinks.
