Slayer, if you are not going to use your laptop for gaming at all I would recommend that you just buy one of those "Apple laptop things"

I bought an IBM X41 for my wife, and I think it's a pretty good laptop. It doesn't have the high specs you required though.

To bad it would take the GDP of a small african country to afford one of them!

If its not for gaming, then I'd get the mac pro 17'' like some guys have said

Correct subjunctive ftw

€dit: If you've got about 800€ to waste, why not go for a MacBook Pro - as it says, it's for the Pros... in exceeding their credit card limit, though -.-

I've had loads of IBMs in the past and they are build like a tank. Never had one break (and abuse my laptop pretty badly). Lately I've had a HP which is also good, but is not as stable as the IBMs. I suppose you could buy a mac, but I've never been a fan of their OS, so it would rule one out for me personally.
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

the Macbooks are great, if you have the money.

Apart from that, if sufficient RAM and CPU are your only basic requirements, I don't think the Manufacturer or model really matters. Make sure you get a Intel core duo mobile CPU though, they are much more efficient than those from AMD, as far as battery life goes.

Standard 15'' Notebooks with the Intel® Core 2 Duo T5500 Processor and 2GB RAM come at less than 1.000,00 € these days. But that's only 1,66 GHz.

If you want more CPU power, for example the Intel T5600, T7100 or T7200 processors, you'll have to spend a little more.

However, the smallest Apple MacBook has the Intel T7200 Processor @ 2,00 GHz, and if you do want those 2 Gigs of RAM, you can always upgrade, which leads to around 1.219,00 € for the white 13,3'' MacBook with 2 GB RAM. Sure, the screen is a bit small at 13,3'', but it's probably the cheapest way to get hold of a 2,00 GHz CPU.
And Mac's are very well suited for use in Audio recording.

A few that come up in my mind:

Macbook (Although it might be slight overkill since it's got the 8600m GT and you aren't going to game. Got a good processor though.)
Lenovo Thinkpads or some other IBM notebooks, namely the T61. (Solid build, decent parts)
Dell (Yes, it is Dell. Their desktops may not be up to par, but their notebooks (The new Latitude lineup) are very nice)
Asus (Solid build (IBM is generally more durable though), decent parts, and they look somewhat nice.)
HP (Has a good lineup of business class notebooks.)
Zepto (Nice notebooks, but it's difficult to get to to the States.)

You might want to get a processor (Santa Rosa). It's Intel's C2D with a 800Mhz FSB. Numberings are odd, not even. T7100, T7300, etc.
