indeed, should be a lot better, although getting a card with proper digital out and speakers with an optical in would be even better

Out of interest.....can you give me an example of speakers with optical in?

Because all the top-of-the range creative 7.1 ones don't seem to have it.   (I didn't look too hard mind....)

I doubt there's any speakers with optical in. I think the optical stuff are to connect dvd-players, amplifiers and such devices

I got a X-Fi card today too Extreme Music to be exact. I was also in between those two card, but after some research came to the conclusion that extreme music was better

I wouldn't go for either of them really. Go for a cheaper one. You don't need something so powerful. Save up for something else.

I used onboard sound for 3 years and it was brilliant.

Which ones is better
They are the same. Retail just means it comes in a retail box. The OEM is just the card no box, and maybe  no instructions or CD.

Both basically the same, if it was me I'd not have either and go for the one with the 64MB RAM on it, as you'll actually get some sort of performance increase with that, with those you just get slighty better sound and a dented bank balance.
I take it you havent went from onboard to one of those.
Never used onboard, simply because of the fact it uses CPU time.

The thing is, it's all very well and good getting a £60 sound card, but unless you have a fckin good set of speakers, or equally fckin good headphones, you wont hear a difference. I just run my fairly cheap sound card through an amp and some good hifi speakers, it shits on what you get from those cards on any set of PC speakers (ie top end gigaworks speakers)

You want to go throw out some cash on better sound buy some good speakers, non of the trash made for PCs get some real speakers.

Yeah you'd see more improvment from some new speakers IMO, cost a fair bit more though.

Fair enough, if you're going from onboard to one of those I'd get the cheaper one, you'd hear no difference between that and the more expensive one, OEM is as good as retail just no pretty box and you might need to go download the drivers but that about it, you might not get a warranty with it either but thats pretty rare.

Id rather pay the extra money for the 'pretty box and drivers'

Your going to want to download the drivers anyway, the ones on the CD with are probabaly going to be out of date by now.

I made the Jump from onboard to an Xtreme Gamer...

I really like the sound that comes out of it...

Even if you are using headphones, you can clearly tell a difference..

I meant an amplifier with optical in & speakers connected to it. Although I think there were some logitech PC speakers that opt. in. not sure though. In the end it doesn't really make a difference if the amplifier is in the speakers or in a separate case

I have the Xtreme gamer, and it sounds pretty good.  I really don't think the sound is any better than my Fortissimo III, but they dropped driver support, so the last driver was a few years old now, and I really wanted to be able to use the front audio ports on my case.  That is the one feature that I truly love about my Gamer is the front audio port connector!

I dunno sfa about sound cards, but what I do say is, compare the onboard sound of a relativly high end motherboard with one of these sound cards on identical speakers and I doubt many could honestly tell the difference.  I am sure there is, but, not £50 worth

read the review on overclockers, every single person can tell a big diffrence

I doubt they actually can, always take those 'reviews' with a pinch of salt

And, none of them (so far as I could see, I just glanced) mentioned what there motherboard was, well one guy did.  I am talkin about somethin along the lines of the Evga n680i, or Gigabyte DQ6

The XtremeMusic is better, the Xtreme Gamer is like Half-sized and it doesn't come with as much stuff an doesn't Ultra High sound quality in BF2 like the XtremeMusic does.
