just as some more imput. I went from my onboard sound (some apparentely super-good Karajan audio module thingy) and I have to say that the upgrade to an xtreme Music was well worth it. Everything does sound better and clearer. Although it is even better if I hook up the onboard though the S/PDIF-in/out to the home cinema.
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

I made the Jump from onboard to an Xtreme Gamer...

I really like the sound that comes out of it...

Even if you are using headphones, you can clearly tell a difference..
Yeah, the weapons just sound punchier/better. It's like night and day IMO, especially on 2142.

I have the extreme Music card as well, and its pretty damned good, although the drivers install A LOT of other software...

Um.... I really think youre all wrong, search up X fi on wikipedia or google, the Xtreme Music actually uses the Audigy chipset, its not even X-fi, its Audigy and the drivers further proove that. The Xtreme Gamer is a real X-fi. SHIT NO WAIT, I thought you said the Xtreme AUDIO MY BAD. So its actually the other way round,

The X-Fi Extreme Music and Gamer are both X-Fi.
The X Fi Extreme Audio is not an X-Fi, its an Audigy.

I blew up my pc by putting ram in the wrong way, re-consider your words

lol, ill be fine, im past that stage.
don't use a hammer while installing, try not to short anything out and nothing bad *should* happen
I used a hammer to install a card once. It was an ISA card and I just could not get the fucker in. The hammer worked a treat, suprisingly.

indeed, should be a lot better, although getting a card with proper digital out and speakers with an optical in would be even better
The X-Fi has SPDIF out on it, that's perfectly adequate. The difference between optical and coax digital audio is inperceptible. Getting digital speakers and hooking them up digitally makes an enormous difference though.

Both basically the same, if it was me I'd not have either and go for the one with the 64MB RAM on it, as you'll actually get some sort of performance increase with that, with those you just get slighty better sound and a dented bank balance.
Yeah, if you're lucky maybe that'll translate to an increase of 1 or possibly even *gasp* 2 fps. The editions with XRAM are a waste of money. Money that could be spent on getting better quality other components that would actually give a real performance boost.

not out of the box though. you need one of those digital I/O thingys. Also it doesn't support all kinds of digital encoding which is just a huge pain IMO
