Realize that 'Americans' applies to anyone in North and South America. That includes Canada, The 49 States in North America (Hawaii is in the Pacific Ocean) and all other Central/South American countries.

I believe what the poll shows is the views of the American people are aligned more with the democrats than the Republicans. 

Neither party is impressive, make no illusions about that.  However it is interesting listening to GW last night at a fund-raiser for Republican Congressmen how the Republicans did this and the Republicans did that, yet the people who they are supposed to be serving don't have the same goals of views.
