Fatah gunmen have stormed the Hamas-controlled Palestinian parliament building in Ramallah in the West Bank. The clashes came after Fatah was ousted from Gaza by Hamas, ending a week of clashes which left more than 100 dead. In a show of strength, supporters of Mr Abbas' Fatah movement paraded around Ramallah and fired weapons into the air. A senior Palestinian official said Mr Walles told President Abbas that the US would lift its ban on direct aid to the new Palestinian government after it was sworn in later on Saturday, Reuters news agency reported.

What implications will this have?
Will the ban on West Bank be lifted?
Could this lead to negotiations between West Bank and Israel?

1) Sounds like the "country" of Palestine has just broken up into 2 states. Not like they were unified in anyway in the first place but this just confirms it.
2) What ban? If that's the ban of US Aid, then maybe as everyone seems to support Fatah more.
3) West Bank has places like Jerusalem and whatnot, seems more close to Israel than Gaza. Especially with not-so loonies controlling it, maybe just maybe there will be negotiations with the WB and Israel.

But what do i know.

west bank was Jordanian, gaza strip was Egyptian, actually. they were both conquered by Israel in the 1967 war. ( in addition to the Sinai peninsula, but Israel handed that back to Egypt in exchange for a recognised border)

That is like saying England is part of Italy because of the roman empire. Israel wasn't a country for hundreds of years until Israeli terrorists (using the current description of them) forced out the British, before that the entire region was known as Palestine.

Israel best move since 1967 has been to pull out of Gaza, it has caused the Palestinians to point their guns at each other to fight over who owns what. If Fatah can take control of the West Bank with the funds they will now be getting from having restrictions lifted then could actually be peace for at least some Palestinians.

Israel’s new defence minister Ehud Barak is planning an attack on Gaza within weeks to crush the Hamas militants who have seized power there.

According to senior Israeli military sources, the plan calls for 20,000 troops to destroy much of Hamas’s military capability in days.

The raid would be triggered by Hamas rocket attacks against Israel or a resumption of suicide bombings…

Israeli officials believe their forces would face even tougher resistance in Gaza than they encountered during last summer’s war against Hezbollah in south Lebanon.
