I'm fairly sure I've heard AH-1Z "super cobra" outside of the game.
Besides, i've never heard the "viper" designation before. I believe the US operates Apache, Cobra, and soon Comanche attack helicopters.
The viper is just a modded version, but I'd still call it the cobra.

Yeah, the Comanche is gone. I don't think the AH-1Z is called a Viper. I know the F-16 is. It's a freakin' Super Cobra.
FYI, the P-41 was only an experimental plane. the P-47 was the original Thunderbolt. The A-10 was named after the P-47 due to the two planes' similarity in effectiveness of ground attack and ability to take a beating.Talon wrote:

And no. The AH-1W is the Super Cobra. The 1Z is a modernised version.
As with many aircraft, they do get multiple nicknames by the Military Designation and Pilots pet names. Many older aircraft are re-named when newer upgrades are added. I.e. the F-16 Fighting Falcon/Viper, A6E Intruder/Prowler(which is has a longer fuseloge and avionics pack), F-117 Nighthawk/Wobbly Goblin, F-105 Starfighter/Widowmaker, and so on. The A-10's pet name (warthog)fits it damn well as it can pretty much root out anything that's dug in deep with it's gun.
Getting back to the Chopper, It'll most likely always be called Cobra, because that's what it's known as from it's inception. Even though it's a Super Corbra, Viper or whatever you wanna call it.
