BSOD - While playing oblivion

K so i got a lovely BSOD while playing oblivion, does someone know a site where i can check the following error message to see what it actually means:

STOP: 0x0000008E (0XC0000005, 0XB66FBFB1, 0XB4BE3BAC, 0X00000000)

SPBBCDrv.sys - Address B66FBFB1 base at B66EB000, Datestamp 436ad76e

I know those are registry locations. But i dont know what for. Ive done a registry clean up, registry defrag, disk cleanup, disk defrag using Tune Up Utilites 2006. Not sure if it solved the problem or not, but the BSOD did say something about my disks.

Hm. Is it cracked, or a real version?

There should be a error checker where it allows you to see your errors that have occurred un the past few months. But I am unsure if that is just on Vista or not. I cannot remember for the life of me where it was...
^ This allows you to go online and check with MS to see what problem it is. Don't worry, no connecting shit, just a simple direct link to an error page report on MS site. --- Seeing as you have done a registry clean up, it may have destroyed the evidence.

Do a memory test. Oblivion takes up a lot of memory usage. Your memory may have errors in them. Run MEMTESTX86 when booting up your PC and run for at least 4 hours. It should come up with any errors your memory may have. Those errors don't always indicate a faulty stick, they may indicate that you are running your memory at too high a voltage or too low timings.

Really depends though.

The registry data stamps may be from Oblivion itself. You can check that, although it may take you some time. If they are, then it is a matter of re-installing oblivion and re-running it.

The BSOD could also be from the memory, that is why I suggested a mem check.

Real, I also added Knights of the Nine, and DLC along with a reality mod, makes like it none leveling enemies.

Ill do all the things you have suggested. Im thinking it is the RAM, ill do the MEMTEST first.

Like all things irritating (software creations) - anti-virus software often behaves like a virus. You need to de-install, or re-install the symantic virus software on your computer.

Well, the SPBBCDrv.sys is a good clue. It's part of the norton security package. If you'd said you DIDN'T run norton, I'd have expected this file to be a trojan.
Some AV/firewall/security suites are just too invasive to be truely good. Sure they'll keep you safe, but they'll also stop you from doing the stuff you WANT on your PC.... For AV I like to recommend Panda or AVG, as these maybe less frequently updated (usually only 4-5 times a week), but they're also less invasive, and much easier to disable if need be.
I'd usually like to recommend that people stay away from: Mcafee, Norton or BlackIce if you're gaming. Though I'd HIGHLY recommend either of these if you're only doing casual office stuff on your PC.

yes. It's terribly annoying.. especially if you have vista. I downloaded the new nvidia driver and got a whole bunch of BSODs... after reinstalling norton and the driver they stopped...

I dont quite get why its started doing it. I have XP and have had this comp about 6 months now, no problems. The only problem i have with reinstalling it is that number of times you can install it. I dont want to use one up... But if its necessary i will do it.

Norton is a poor piece of software compared to the other anti viruses and anti spywares out there.
Bit Defender, NOD32, AVG and Zone Alarm all out perform and are better than Norton.

K, based on the responses im not too worried. BSOD is normally, "o dear, my computer just died.", ill reinstall oblivion and give it a go with norton off. Maybe turn down the settings abit too.

K i tried to reinstall it and after i do my cd drive wont open. So i restart my comp and it opens but now my external hard drive cant be detected.

I gotta have a virus...

Those are memory addresses not registry locations mate.

yeah i noticed later that they were memory addresses and not processor registrys. Anyway now my harddrive is working again. But seriously wtf... anything to do with oblivion kills my comp.

How much RAM you running? and try shifting your swap file to another hard disk if you can, may just have been a write error that fucked up worse than usual.

Sort of off topic, but i'd just like to show everyone that you can tweak Oblivion to allow use of Shader Model 3.0 for those that don't know but have a graphics card that supports it:

In the Oblivion.ini file, under [Graphics Variables] (or something similiar), enter this:

bAllow30Shaders=1

bAllow30Shaders=0 - If set to 1, this option allows (but does not force) the use of Shader Model 3.0 on graphics cards which support it, namely Nvidia GeForce 6600 or newer, or ATI X1000 series or newer. This can potentially improve performance when using HDR rendering for example. Check your RendererInfo.txt file in your \Documents and Settings\User\Documents\My Games\Oblivion directory to see if your card supports SM3.0 next to the option '3.0 Shaders'. Note however that even by enabling this option, Oblivion still appears to use 2.0 shaders (check the 'PSTarget' and 'VSTarget' lines in Rendererinfo.txt). In any case, if you have one of the cards mentioned above, it cannot hurt to enable this option.

SPBBCDrv.sys is a Norton file. Therefore it's quite obvious you have Norton.

Get rid of Norton (don't just turn it off) - the worst AV software around - and get different AV. You'll probably be ok then.

It sounds very much like it's an issue with your AV software, so this next thing probably won't work.

Do you get a horrible noise when the BSOD occurs?

If so, try opening DXdiag and disabling audio hardware acceleration - I know it sounds weird, but give it a go.

Told me to disable new hardware. I have none...

Also to disable caching or shadowing in BIOS.

Based on things ive read and problems ive had... the only thing i can think that is causing this is having my external hard drive or even my USB mouse plugged in while playing oblivion.

Just ran dell driver reset tool. It found no problems...
