I'm moving there.  When?  Not until next year...it's the soonest I can get my job transferred out there.

Problem being?  I've never been to NYC before.  I'm heading out there in August/September to check it out...but I figured I'd post in here to see if I can get any advice/input from people here.  My best friend just moved out there...he found an apartment in Bay Ridge, which is supposedly a pretty nice part of town.  Low crimes rates, not too expensive, easy transportation to Manhattan.  He told me I should look there and Park Slope...but other than that...I don't know much of anything about the neighborhoods.  Manhattan is probably too expensive for my tastes and I know there's parts of Brooklyn that aren't the nicest...but...what do you guys think?

So yeah, any help you guys can give would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

...oh, and don't spam this with "move to _____ instead" or "new york sucks".  Your post will be deleted.

I found a map that shows all the homicides that have occurred in NYC over the past two years I think....and Queens had like twice as many as anywhere else.  I was scurred.

That was the old plan.  The old plan didn't take into account that I don't know anyone out there...and that I have a better chance of getting promoted if I don't move to LA.

NYC is now at the top of my "I want to visit" list. Maybe sometime next year, so I'll have to come and see you.

Me too.  Like I said, I've never been there before, but I'm heading out there for ten days in late August/early September.

I love Chicago, but I've lived here ever since I was born...I just need a change.  And since I'm a city boy, I figure what better place to move than the city that never sleeps?

But yeah, I'm really looking forward to heading out there later this year...and even moreso to moving out there next year.

I would look very seriously at Queens--Flushing and Astoria. Cowami is a Queens expert (and probably knows Bay Ridge) because I think he lives there. If you get a roommate, you can probably live in Manhattan on the upper east side or upper west side, especially if you get a fourth-floor walkup. If you can get a place in Park Slope, take it. Park Slope is very cool and getting cooler every day, but it's also getting more expensive every day. Williamsburg is similar, except with younger people. If you are adventurous, you might be able to live in Manhattan on the Lower East Side. It's kind of run down (and therefore kind of cheap) but it's right next to Greenwich Village and the East Village, which are the most happening places in the city.

Edit: Gratuitous Cowami insult removed.

I can't believe you're leaving Chicago for New York. Chicago > New York. Been to both cities twice.

...

What was the insult?

Bay Ridge is a good neighborhood (though I don't know too much about it), and is quite literally right across the river from Manhattan. If I'm not mistaken, the A, C, R, Q, W, N, and F trains all stop in the area, so it really is quite easy to get to Manhattan.

And yes, I live in Flushing (Fresh Meadows, technically). I don't really know much about local real estate, considering I'm in high school, but Fresh Meadows is a nice area. It mostly consists of elderly Jewish people, some Asian families, and St. John's University students. There's almost no serious crime (just the occasional party gone wild), and there's easy access to the Long Island Expressway and Grand Central Parkway, two of the main highways in Queens. From where I am, it's about an hour commute into the city (which can change quite dramatically according to rush hour [NYC's unpredictability FTL]).

So yeah, good luck finding an apartment and stuff!

Go to Yankee Stadium.  Its getting torn down in 2009.

The bars are open real late everywhere.  At 3am, people are still hanging out in the streets and outside the bars...its got a great night life.

Cause you aren't Chinese?

Don't worry, the flies around the food really mean nothing. It just goes to show how fresh the food is.

And a bit of advice: Never make eye contact with anyone. If you do, stare the mofugger down.

I lived in New York City.

Its not bad.  Lived in Flushing.  I also lived in Queens.

Cost of living is a little higher there.  Gas more expensive.

I've been to Manhatten.

oh and a tip:

DO NOT GO ON A SUBWAY GOING WEST IN MANHATTEN LATE AT NIGHT!!!!!!!

seriously.  This also applies to Staton Island.

Places you might not want to go alone at night: Williamsburg, Harlem, Chelsea (cause u might get butt raped), Flatbush.
There is night life everywhere for the most part. Don't move to the Bronx, Staten Island, or Queens, they're fucking boring.
