If my CPU was overheating. What would i experience? Would the computer freeze (ie: Screen just goes still, can't move mouse or anything and nothing short of mains switch works) or would something else happen?

Or did what i describe sound more like a PSU problem?

What's the general symptoms of overheating/power supply failure?

Well it sounds like you already have those symptoms yes? It could be other parts overheating, my advice to you is to get a program that monitors temps (i use Everest Ultimate) you can use CPUZ which is a free program.

You deffinatly don't want your CPU overheating, check all the fans in your case to see if there working and relatively free of dust. Also, leaving the side off your case is a good way to make sure your computer isnt over heating.

If you find a temperature then please post it so we can see if your running hot.

(If your familiar with Torrents and software stwealing then i would recommend stealing Everest Ultimate, its a VERY VERY thorough program.)

Well one way of finding out its black bits all over the inside your computer case (which is the glue from your heatsink which has just gone crisp and the fan blown it around) from previos experiance lol and you can get software that can monitor the temperature, i used AI booster but it was buggy.

Cheers Dezert, your inbox is full so i can't reply lol

I do have Everest HOME though. CPU temp is between 50-60C whilst idle. Yep, pretty hot. However, i still don't know whether it's purely that or also a PSU problem.

Basically, i used to get those freezes mainly when using my Video Card. First it only used to happen a couple of times, then all the time. Then i removed it and started using onboard again. No more freezes, that is until i did something "intensive" like play HL1 (lol played quite good on onboard video though). So, could it be CPU or PSU?

I hope it isn't CPU, changing my Power would be easier than taking off a Heatsink, removing the thermal pad, replacing it with heat solution and then putting a better fan/heatsink on.

It's not that hard.

50-60C is pretty high, but should be stable.

What is your GFX tempertaure?

I can't remember, i've taken out my GPU since April. If it was overheating, wouldn't i experience artifacts/distortion (like in that guys topic) instead of just a total freeze? I don't think it was GPU overheating, i remember keeping the case open and feeling it and it wasn't that hot.

When i mean freeze though, it's like...one minute i'm moving my mouse around, next thing is that it freezes and nothing is moving. What causes that? It was really frustrating, but it dissapeared when i took out my GPU. I tried it on 2 different GPU's (6600 and FX5500) and it froze on both. So could it be a PSU problem?

It seems like really bad cooling, 50-60c idle for a CPU is bad, imagine full load.

I think 65C is the point where AMD64s start slowing down... intel, probably around 60C too

If it happened on both cards, it could possibly be a driver issue, if not, it's your cooling for CPU ( / whole case) Or some other malfunction I don't know about/haven't thought of.

and yea the PSU might be too weak/aged. know what PSU you're using?

It's some random make. 280W with 18A on the 12v wire or something.

Man, it does sound like CPU overheating. What's annoying is that i've cleaned out the damn dust, and now i have to do invasive surgery to fix it. Thing is, i've already tried taking off the heatsink but it's near impossible, AMD Barton heatsinks are apparently really hard to take off. What's worse is that it's probably a thermal pad. Which means that i'll have to scour it off before I add any paste.

I'm thinking of just getting a new PC, but i don't have the money.

your PSU is crap

extremely low wattage and its rails are probably not stable at all.
