Well, I'm completely sick to death of my current job. I'm 6 months into a part time postgrad computing (coursework) degree but I'm thinking I need to fast track things a bit.

I noticed quite a few entry level positions in the IT industry want someone with a MCP (Microsoft Certified Professional) qualification. Anyone here done one of these things or know anything about them?

Soz if you think this is the wrong section - and yeah it's probably not even the right forum, but at least I know I'll check back here

I've done Installing and Managing Windows XP (Course ??-270)

I was doing my MSCE, but the damn Centre closed down. Got an A+ Software/Hardware, Network+, MCP and a MCSE book out of 3 months work/tuition though By my rate I would have finished the 3yr course in 10mo.

Mine was piss easy btw. If you have ever installed Windows XP you've already passed.

lol. I thought as much, but it can't hurt to have the bit of paper. I just don't want to waste a whole lot of time and money chasing this if no-one takes it seriously. All the websites talk it up, but they make money out of it so I don't want to trust them...

Finish your degree or switch courses, don't drop out to do a mickey mouse course.

An MCP or 2 is ok for low end technician jobs, if you wan't to earn some money you're going to want at least an MCSE (you can use MCPs towards an MCSE) and some sort of dedicated networking certification too, N+ is quite well recognised pretty much everywhere (A+ course is a decent starting point, I think it'll count as an MCP too if you want to use it towards an MCSE later.)

The day of the degree is dead (in hands on IT circles anyway) it's all very well and good learning how to fix a PC but people dont really care about what you've learned they want someone who they know can do the job.

I've lost count of the ammount of people I've come across that think they're gods gift to the world because they got a peice of paper only to then go on to find out they're fucking useless at the job.

If i were you I'd go do an A+ and a couple of MCPs get an entry level job, then when you've been there a while start thinking about higher quals, by the time they're finished you'll have been working for a couple of years and have all the proof you're not useless you'll need.
