"A group supporting Protestant victims of the troubles will meet with senior gardai today to get permission for a major rally in Dublin.

Families Acting for Innocent Relatives (FAIR) held a ’Love Ulster’ parade in the capital last year which had to be abandoned after a riot broke out involving fringe Republicans."

Some of you may remember what happened last time the Orange bands tried to march through the capital of the Republic with their Union Jacks and unique brand of triumphalist music, what makes them think things will have changed in one year?

If there is ever to be reunification on this island, Orange men are going to have to be made feel as much a relevant part of it, as anyone else.  At some point these marches/demonstrations are going to have to be viewed as harmless pageantry.  No matter how you feel about it as a republican they are now weaved into the fabric of our history. You can choose not to be offended if you want

I personally don't care about the marching anymore but there's no accounting for mindless yobs with nothing better to do than hurl bricks and burn cars. There needs to be a lot of public discussion on the issue to try and normalise the cultural differences between Republicans and our marching Irish brothers in the North.

I was glad to see Paisley and McGuinness having a joke and a giggle about their political relations on the news yesterday.

wasn't that extraordinary? I couldn't fucking believe it, all those thousands who died, were maimed, and still suffer the loss of loved ones, and now those very words that people died over, are now little more than quips. I felt sick to the pit of my stomach tbh..

I was glad to see they were able to get along in a seemingly friendly manner but I get what you mean, I couldn't believe the way he used the old phrase 'not an inch, no surrender' in that context. It makes me wonder why wars, disputes and conflicts can't just be solved by playing chess instead ...it would save a lot of lives.

You are right IG-Calibre although I have always disagreed with any form of triumphalism. And that's what Orange Marches are all about. And plenty of orange symbolism was used last time and will be used this time too.
Orangisim became a tradition, a tradition of reminding the Catholic underclass who their masters are/were. There is no need for that in our society. Willy Frazer is just trying to score points and gain kudos from the hard line unionist community. Ive heard him on various documentaries and yes he lost a relative, but it is plain that he is also a bigot. He may have become a bigot through the lose of a loved one, but a bigot none the less. If this march was a genuine attempt to help the Republic of Ireland's population to understand orange tradition and was an attempt to integrate I would be all for it.
It isn't, they want to march through Dublin so they can say they did, plain and simple. What next, the relatives of the Monghan and Dublin bombings marching down the Shankill road in Belfast? I know what would happen if they did, the same thing that's going to happen if they get permission this time. Riot.
In saying that, its a minority who riot and caused the shit the last time, so it would be unfair if the riots were the reason why the march is banned this time. It should be banned because it is a triumphalist reminder of how the Catholic majority was subdued and therefore ruled by rich landed classes sent over from England and Scottish settlers for 100s of years. Catholics were worse off than second class citizens on their own land and this only really changed in the early 1960s.
If they are genuine, there will be no need for flags and orange banners, just placards and the usual stuff associated with a march not associated with triumphalism.

God those Orange bastards piss me off. This is nothing short of deliberate provocation.

The republicans have worked towards peace, ever since the 80s when Gerry Adams began to lead Sinn Fein to peace in the 80s.

The unionists have done nothing but try to cause trouble in Ulster, from the "no concessions" attitude of Ian Paisley and Co in 1968 all the way through to refusing to accept the Power Sharing deal in Sunningdale and thinking that the republicans have planned trouble from Good Friday onwards.

And yet they still try to provoke the republicans by marching through catholic areas with their Orange Order.

It annoys me that they are trying to imply that allowing this triumphalist march will somehow honour or commemorate victims of the troubles. Would a respectful march without colourful sashes and music not be more appropriate? Let's call a spade a spade, it's an orange march.

I think we should all just bit our lips and head out to the country that day and let them have there little march! I cant imagine riots as bad as last year as Id guess every guard in the Republic will be there!
